There are two factors in my opinion when rating a Forum scripts as best.

    1. The quality of software, code quality of support etc
    2. Community supporting the script, mods available, add on scripts available

If we consider avg of these two factors, I VB wins due to excellent and vast community and modding base

I think VBulletin has the most options and plugins. The price is also very fair.

Choose VBulletin if you want to develop a large forum.
    Otherwise,choose phpbb.

No matter what script you chose you need to work it. If you're more comfortable with one script, chose that one. I have seen good and bad forusm on all possible scrips: in the end it's about the admin more than the script

    a) vbulletin for everything (no free)
    b) IPB for games communities (no free)
    c) Free forums to make b-communities.

To start a decent site I choose vbulletin.

    Regards.

I need a free forum software and I was looking at SMF, YaBB and phpBB. Which one of these has most active community and plugins and components available.
Also i've heard about phpBB that it is a bit hacker friendly. :p But that should not be a prob coz the production environment is an Intranet with hardly any technically oriented person.
Still even keeping the security aspect (who knows I might have to take it online some day) in mind which one?

go for smf, which is far more secure and has lots of features, you can install mods with just one click, I have installed a seo smf as well which makes urls like thread titles here is example of here

I really like Yabb and PhPBB. But of course, they're both free.
