You can't, I still have 404 errors showing up from content I removed in 2003.

If you really want, put the url in your robots.txt as disallow and ask google to remove it.

Are these pages existing pages ?

If the pages do not exit anymore you can block the crawling to that page in robots.txt and if the page still exist in the Google results you can remove it with the Google removal tool

    thanks for your reply...
If I use robots.txt, it can be URL restricted by robots.txt. Is it ok?

Is it safe to seo if I use a plugin to redirect 404 error to the home page?

Customized 404 Page is the solution if you don't want to loose the visitor who visited error page but on GWT, its either you disallow their indexing or remove them from your list of inner pages.

You can create 404 custom page, and apply redirect rule for all 404 pages redirect to 404 custom page.

The best way to remove 404 errors is to set up 301 redirects to some other relevant pages....

You can remove your pages from Google's index manually using Google URL removal tool.

This helps in removing your pages from search results too.
