How do you list sites in your directory?

Just curious about how others list (Rank) sites in their directories? Alphabetically, number of hits, comments, or a culmination of all?

Depends on what option the script has....

But prefer to rank it according to PR, quality always come first...

but in case of my Biz Directory script, the default is set to Alphabetically

    By Supporter (e.g. feature-->regular-->regular w/reciprocol-->free)

The pagerank, hits, alpha are there, but supporters of the directory get placement over everything else.

Yes, of course supporters have top positions as it should be. I did mean free listings though. I should have said that. :D

Well the thing is, take a good look around the directories. You have guys that have attained high pr, but have submitted for free, thus giving them first page rankings.

When i said supporters, I literally mean by supporters, by way of submission, as noted above.

I will eventually turn sorting into the same type of listings. Whereas for example, if you've paid for a regular link, but lets say your PR is 2 and everyone else in the directory is PR 8 but they submitted for free. Well, the PR 2 will list first because it was a supporter e.g. paid listing.

    follow what I mean now?

In my opinion, ranking by PR is the best option.

I list for dated added, so new sites go first and always get first page.

That's the worst one, in my opinion. :) It punishes sites listed first that actually help to build a directory.

The big problem, you submit to a paid directory and get on 2 or 3 page with PR 0 and probably not even indexed I don’t think is a big incentive for submission.
If you get on the first page I think the submitter will be happier :)

I order mine by Pagerank, at squidlink.com at least, i believe that is the best option, if there is one. :)
I agree with mystikmedia, if you list by date added, then most of the time early adopters will be punished. ;)

I wouldn't say so. If everybody pays the same amount of money for listing space, I think it's fair to list them in the order of submissions. That way, each paid listing will be given roughly the same exposure. Of course, featured listings or free listings are different story. Just my opinion. :)

Sure...for a short time until pushed out by newer submissions. There has to be a better option than that. :) PR is still the best opinion, in my opinion, especially if the site updates it after each PR update. That way, the companies that actually work hard on their sites and provide good sites that others link to, visitors are interested in, etc. are listed at the top, and on downward.

/me wonders if there's some script or some way to randomize the submissions there... now that would be cool! :)

Somebody as to lose if you have a low PR you lose; you get from day one in 2 page.

You have a new site PR 0 do you pay $20-$60 to get listed on a PR 0 not indexed 2 page?

I think for the visitor probably the pagerank and alphabetic order makes more sense, but then he can chose to list sites this way.

Probably is a good idea to make a pool! :D

I will open another thread with a pool

Isn't this a bit self-perpetuating? The sites with the best PR get listed first, and therefore get the best PR transfer from directories that rank sites in this way. Also, you are reliant on Google to determine your rankings.

I prefer to rank sites alphabetically, just because it looks neater.

We do the same concept but with a different implementation. We maintain a "Strength Rank (SR)" for every listing that is loosely equivalent to how much the listing has paid towards their listing. Folks are free to make additional payments at any time to boost their Strength Rank and appear higher in the listings.

This is why we say, "where the strongest brands rise to the top".

Wow! This is getting good. Thanks everyone for the contributions. Personally, this is why I run a free and paid type directory. Those desiring to help me support my directory get the butter, and those who choose to go the free route get listed according to a culmination of hits, votes, and comments. PR is not factored on my directory though.
