In my opinion, you have to look at both sides of the equation.

    Here is a long-time PR6 free directory
GOOD: they have consistently been listings 200 new sites per month.
BAD: their pending links have been growing by 15000-20000 per month.

Directories that reciprocate with submitter will usually never delete a site and will just let it build up in a queue. If a directory does delete it, the user will get an email of rejection and the user will usually delete the reciprocal.

95% of the links are usually spam and you can delete them just by looking at the title and description. Its not that hard. I do that all the time. I mean you wouldn't approve a link which has a title which looks like this?

I recently started submitting my sites to free directories myself using an auto submitter. I only have to fill out the Captcha and the software does the rest. Now the problem for me comes finding good free pr directories which actually approve links.

OMG lol. Nice list you got there. :)

That's not likely to happen because its the directory owners who pay for the licences. It will be their first preference to make the script more friendly for their buyers(80% get rich quick folks). :)

As far as I know yes they do. A back link from a reputed high PR directory like yahoo or botw can really boost your serps. But the draw back is that botw won't list your site and will keep your money if they 'think' your site isn't upto their standards and yahoo charges 300 bucks for one site.

26,211 emails (minus duplicates) to sell and counting. Gotta love how blatant they are about it. I bet the 179 articles have been used somehow too.

if genuine approval of any link from admin i thing pending figure of 500 or more is too much.

High PR free directories often get 5000+ submissions per week. Some of the better directories get even more. I am OK with a high number of pendings as long as they regularly approve free listings.

As far as ppl are submitting, I don’t think that should be called “Not an active directory” lol… I think a proper name would be or something like 1) nightmare directory, 2) defunct directory.

If i was the owner of phpld I will sue these ppl they give a bad reputation not even to the company but even to directory business in general.

It may be an abandoned directory. There is no other reason for a web directory to have over XXXXX pending links.

You are right, I should come up with a new word for the worst offenders. Yours are good.

    Others that fit would be:
    Walking Dead directory
    Zombie directory
    Dodo directory

I would love to hear your ideas.

The main thing is not only the PR but it should give approved link as well.

Well,it is a point of high notice when doing directory submissions as we usually do it without seeing the statistics and it is simply wasting your time in doing submissions in such directories..
What is way of confirming that statistics provided on site are correct and updated..

    As usual most are cluelles

i have some directories, on some pending list is 10,000 - 20,000 however if you check latest links section you see links approved every day

That's because i can't be bothered to delete 1000's of links just to make the pending police happy

Also keeping them inactive spares me of same people submitting them again

As i side note, the biggest pending list is around 20,000 (and around 150k links active) but if you get a link in that directory it will show up first in your google webmaster tools link list.

So don't assume you know to much, it may be possible to be clueless.

Short story : pending number means nothing, latest links regular new entries means something

It's not about 'pending police' it is about how your directory is perceived by potential submitters and customers. Like it or not, a queue of 10 or 20,000 sends a bad message. If you have a blended directory of free and paid submissions it certainly gives the impression that you are ignoring the free ones.

I get the concept of keeping them from resubmitting. Seems a better strategy would be to mark those listings as banned and keep your queue cleaner. I don't know about general directories, but I rarely see the same site being spammed on different occasions. Seems like you are keeping a ton of junk in your database for very little benefit.
