Duplicate contents problem Answer.com and wikipedia

why answer.com is copying every article from wikipedia?
they don't fear from duplicat content problem ?

Last time i checked, they were pulling from more places than wikipedia. Most of the pages would pass as unique. Answers also seems to be cacheing & doesn't seem to be updating on the fly, so user updated content isn't shown, so that would also help them further avoid filters.

 

Also, they're probably not as worried as most would be, as they also receive other forms of traffic via definition search in Google. I'm sure that's a BIG CHUNK of their traffic.

 

A PR7 with 770K backlinks will get away with things you and I never could.

 

Agreed. There are soooo many dupe pages out there and HUGE chunks of Quotes that google is more concerned about back links and uniqueness.

This case, smaller sites will suffer. If content copied from smaller sites Google treat Answer.com as authority site and their is a chance for smaller sites to recieve duplicate content penalty??

Untill and unless they provide a backlink to sites from where the contents are copied, sites are not safe. I am confused now..

 

It's not just answers.com. A lot of websites copy content from wikipedia. wikipedia content isn't copyrighted.

 

Answers only copy off authoritive or informational sites that gives permission (such like wikipedia) and answer does provides a link to the original source.

As for duplicate content I don't believe there is a "real" penalty, but if it does exist, the return link Answers give back is well worth it sense Answers is a very authoritive site.

it's answers.com for gods sake. It has an S in it, aka more than one answer.

If its true that Answers.com gets some of its sources from Wikipedia, it will be unfair because Wikipedia, which gets its funding from donations, allows human editors to develop content only to be scraped, and placed into another site, along with ads for profit.

 

It may be unfair, but Wikipedia should expect this to happen. It's what 'open source' means, anyway.

JeremyL is right - two sites with identical content will be ranked differently because of other factors - and 770,000 backlinks whips the rest of us any day of the week.

 

Imho the answer is because Answer.com is an authoritative site. Perhaps it's even older than Google itself. Google may put answer.com (and other big authoritative sites) into some kind of "white-list". no way if Microsoft.com or yahoo or "project guttenberg" got banned because of the duplicate contents. search engines like Google in fact desperate to give relevant results to the searcher. all duplicate contents and other things are only to protect the relevant results.
Duplicate penalty, imho, is only to avoid search engine spamming that will dirty the search result.
