Search engines, especially Google, value links as a big part of their search rankings. Without links your site won't rank. They also look at the anchor text link. Directories give you text link with some control of your anchor text. They may not be the easiest links around but they are easier to get than many other types of links.

Directories does pass link juice and anchor value towards your site. It helps to increase the crawlability as well.
