I think a lot of people here have already explained what a long tail keyword is but in relation to the second part of the question relating to seo. My take is that generally these are low competition keywords and so they are easier to rank highly in google for, long tail keywords are also highly targeted this is good if you are selling a highly targeted niche product. The only downside is that you will not get quite as much traffic with long tail keywords.

We use long tail keyword, when single keyword are high competitive, we use keyword phrase for that. Keyword phrase are called the long tail keyword.
