hi i have a website in a very smalll niche with few competitive unoptomized pages. Its just new and has a page rank zero however recently I made links with a good amount of websites and directories that are related to my niche with page ranks of between 2 to 5. How much will this help my website move up in google? I have a feeling it will help a lot could it? my content is all unique as well.
So is it just a case of getting good content, keeping it updated, having good on site SEO and then backlinking with higher PR websites and directories related to your site until you reach number one?
Yeah, first of all, it's all about the good content. If visitors are not interested in your content you will not profit from them until you implement some blackhat tactics. So get the best content, and start building quality links from high pr relevant sites. If the sites are "low-quality", google will see your backlinks as a spam.
You are on the right track. Just keep building links and you will start to see your rankings and page rank improve. This is something that just takes some time.
For the beginning, you can just search on google for your keyword, comment on the posts in the top results so the comments are relevant to your niche, and also you "steal" pr from your future competitors
Quality backlinks are the name of the game. You can never have too many. Personally I don't worry about backlinks campaigning anymore. I just make sure I have lots of quality content. I know that's cliche, but if you have really strong, well researched content, other sites will link to it.
I cannot stress enough. High quality is the key to getting the #1 rankings. Take it from someone who started of Spamming everything. Less links with higher quality will win every single time.

Good Quality links matter a lot. Getting a link from PR1 ,2,3 will help to optimize your website quickly.
your website doesn't have the any good back links then it will be very difficult to get ranks. Quality back links are more helps to PR and SERPs.
To the original poster, what's a "good" amount by your definiton? Because you see, that "good" amount that you said might not be enough to compensate for the requirement of your small niche. Size is relative to the niche's size when it comes to internet marketing.
