From my experience Twitter is good for announcing updates. In terms of converting traffic, it doesn't do too much for me. Maybe it depends on the niche.

 

I agree with buzznebo - however we haven't continually invested time into twitter to try to master it as a traffic source.

We have tried some of the methods you see posted around to cheat the system and grow your twitter base - but in the end this only get's you pretty low value followers, and although you might look cool (social proof) - good luck making money off em!

Typically we use our accounts (all with decent followers) to really just share our content, like buzznebo does as well.

For me, the value in twitter is in being able to follow the evolution of people's thoughts that I find interesting (professionally and otherwise).

On the downside, it is often fragmented information in an already really fragmented world of information!

The main advantage of twitter is that,like other social networking sites its has "no restriction" on "number" of friends you can add in one profile, you can make "countless flowers" on twitter

 

I guess in addition to being a good tool for SMO and learning about others' news pretty soon, Twitter can also be considered a useful way to express your emotions which you can't express openly))) at least, that's how it is frequently used by people)

I would doubt the probability of establishing business partnership in Twitter, if you didn't mean any JV's, of course. I once faced a necessity to contact one programmer whose professional help I needed desperately in Twitter. You know what, he didn't even answer my private messages. May be, there are more successful partnership stories on the Web, but this is my personal experience.
