The .co extension is, if the hype is to believed, the future of the internet and the solution to all the problems that have plagued the current top level domain system.

If you want a good domain name for your blog that will work then stick with a dot com and don’t fall for the hype.

.co is just Colombia's TLD trying to be promoted as an alternative to .com...

Way too expensive, really not worth the premium.

If it does get big it's a good thing for me since I have a 4 letter .co and I can sell it in the future. But if it doesn't get big well I guess it's just 11.99 wasted ;). Haha, and personally I don't think it will get as big as .com or even .net.

At this point in the curve I'd take a .com over a .co - the public isn't familiar with .co and it will be awhile before more widespread adoption of it, if it happens. From a marketing standpoint, I'm sticking with what's familiar & working right now rather than risking the potential problems a .co domain brings with it.

.Co will take some time to mature. Furthermore, .com sounds better. :) I think a 3 letter end is better.

But on another note, 'co' means company in a lot of countries. It is a short form. So it might catch on with companys.

I will consider purchasing few .co domains only if its normal price (register/renew/transfer) drops below 10$

Yes, I think high registration and renewal price is a big problem and this price factor is a problematic area for .co

To me it's kind of a bummer that Overstock decided to change their name to O.co. I would have liked O.us much better. After all they are a United States company. I have a feeling they had a big push in the form of monetary compensation from the Colombian government to make the change. Many companies were paid by .co to use a .co domain extension. That is why they are using Overstock as their marketing gimmick.

.co will never become a big time domain like .com or .net ... ect. And there are plenty of reasons why this domain extension will be all but worthless.

The first and foremost is .co stands for Colombia and not company. When anyone registers a .co domain name here in the United States almost all the money goes directly the Colombian government. Probably without even having to pay taxes on it. In the US they might be able to get away with a large media/marketing push to get a few uninformed individuals with money to spare to buy this domain thinking that it stands for company. This will not happen in other countries (Especially smaller countries) that have their own domain extensions. And even in the US a backlash against the .co domain is building. There are plenty of domains that can be registered for much cheaper where the money does not leave the country.

Second is the price. They put the renewal of the domain between $25.00 and $30.00 per year, but offered the domain at much cheaper for the first year hoping to trick people into thinking they were paying less for the domain. Since this company is now just over a year all the very high renewal fees will start to take affect and many of these people with the .co domain names are going to be in for a rude surprise.

Third is that there are hundreds of domain extensions being released in the near future. People will be able to get a domain extension specific to their need without having to buy a Colombian domain name.

Forth is that people don't like being lied to or tricked. The whole marketing campaign released when .co first came out was complete bs.

Fifth is they have burned bridges with a few of the larger companies that sell domain names and their sketchy business practices have them on very shaky ground with others.

Sixth is that this is not a global domain because it is country specific. It's almost exclusively being marketed in the US and Colombia with extremely limited marketing anywhere else. Just enough so they can say it is global.

i am starting to see .co domains also rank in google - so it seems to be getting somewhere... more than then previously next "big thing" domains...

something has to give in.. as there arent many good ideas in .com left...

Google ranks many different domain extensions including .info which is 1/10th of the cost. Why spend so much on a Colombian domain that is not a top level domain and is country specific? When you can get a domain that matches your needs.

Another drawback to the .co domain is that it does not work on all smart phones / mobile browsers. There are some blocking them. In addition to that all the search engines are not ranking the .co domain in different countries because they understand it is a country specific domain.

If I sound harsh in some of my views it is because I don't want to see people continue to get ripped off by these jokers promoting this overpriced domain as something it isn't.

I thought that too - you could be right tho, and it is hyped up more than it really should - but recently Google announced that they will be treating the .co domain as a main domain IF it contains global content. And this other major company (cant remember the name) recently changed their main domain to a .co domain.

But yes, your right, its better probably buying a .info domain - I personally bought a couple to test them out, and explore how the .co will be.

They also have approved .whatever domains - this is .any made up extension you want - like .phone or .money or anything - but its being reserved for top companies only, and it will cost above $58,000 to subscribe - this is ridicules in my opinion, but kinda exciting too.

.co is a top level domain like .com/.net/.info and is treated by Google like .com/.net/.info
