    Hi All,

I received a Google AdWords voucher when I set up my new business and I'm not too familiar with it. What are the benefits of AdWords and more importantly what do they do??

    Any input appreciated :)

    Thanks

AdWords is a paid online advertising program, which allows you to show ads to a very targeted audience, as mentioned by DavidSkg. When a person searching on keywords you have specified sees your ad and 'clicks' on it, they will be taken to your website. You pay for this click - but you do not pay for your ad to have appeared, unless it is clicked-on.

Once on your site, the person may choose to do business with you, if what they find there meets their expectations and needs.

I would say there are two major types of folks who use AdWords to advertise, as follows:
    1) Business owners who use AdWords to send potential customers to the website for their own business. I think it is safe to say that a large majority of AdWords advertisers fall into this category. These advertiser make money through adwords by sending qualified customers to their site, where they may make a purchase from the advertiser's business. They do this by working hard, learning how to use AdWords very effectively, and then managing their account effectively.

    2) Affiliate marketers who use AdWords to send potential customers to a website that is owned by someone else. They make money by receiving a commission from the owner of the site (or the affiliate program they have joined) - NOT from Google - when those potential customers perform a desired action.

Affiliate marketers make up a small minority of AdWords advertisers - and they have often heard (from parties other than Google) that that they can very easily make a lot of money by 'posting links', 'filling in forms' or some other extremely simple sounding task.

As an aside, if this is how you have heard of AdWords, I would advise that you proceed with caution - as AdWords takes a lot of study and hard work to use effectively.

By way of setting reasonable expectations for AdWords, it is my opinion (having worked with AdWords for many years) that it is rare first time advertiser who starts making a profit from their advertising immediately. Usually, 'success' with AdWords will take some time, and some money invested.

How much time and money it will take is largely dependent upon how much attention is given to both learning the AdWords program and then managing the account once it's running. If I were to summarize how well AdWords will work for a new advertiser in a very straightforward way, it would be like so:

    * Advertisers who expect to very quickly set up their account and then forget about it - and who do not have either the time or interest to really learn how AdWords works - will almost certainly be disappointed in their success.

    * Advertisers who make only a moderate effort will likely see moderate success at best.

    * Advertisers who take advertising with AdWords very seriously can find AdWords to be an exceptionally effective way to send highly qualified potential customers to their site.

When I speak of taking it seriously, I mean spending a substantial amount of time learning both the basics and the nuances of how it works, then, spending a similar amount of time managing the account, experimenting, learning from the results of those experiments and updating the account, tracking one's Return on Investment (ROI) using the free tools available from AdWords, and so on.

Along the lines of learning about AdWords, there is a great deal of information provided in the AdWords Help Center and the AdWords Learning Center - with one of my favorites being found on the page below. It's a very useful overview of how to think about AdWords, and how set up an AdWords account for success:

    Tips for success
    adwords(dot)google(dot)com/support/bin/static.py?page=tips.html

The topics covered on this page - which are essential to using AdWords effectively:

    1. Identify your advertising goals.
    2. Organize your account for maximum effectiveness.
    3. Choose relevant keywords and placements.
    4. Create straightforward, targeted ads.
    5. Optimize your website for conversions.
    6. Track your account performance.
    7. Test and modify your campaigns to get the results you want.

With all that said, I wish the best of success with AdWords, should you decide to give it a try.

The thing to remember here is to use size, loss, and review to avoid losing lots of money and getting swept away in the excitement of Adwords.

    1. Size. This is true with almost any campaign via any platform: start small! Develop a reasonable budget for using Adsense and start off small. You can always increase it, but it’s hard to get back money you shouldn’t have used in the first place. Starting small allows you the time to find out what works, without the pressure of having to get money back in sales to offset the big ad budget.

    2. Loss. This goes along with budget. Within that budget, know what you can afford to lose. It’s entirely possible that your first attempt (or first few attempts) using Adwords fails. As a result, if you put $1000 toward using Adwords but you really could only afford to lose about $300, you’re up a creek without a paddle.

Instead, invest, say, $200 first and wait to see if it works; you can then put another $300 to increase the budget.

    3. Review. This is a game of test and check. By testing a variety of keywords, you can review their results, make adjustments, and keep going. Some of your choices will work, and some won’t. By continually testing and reviewing your strategies, you will, over time, develop a few solid strategies that really bring in the numbers – via traffic AND sales.
