I'm not familiar with the workings of affiliate programmes can you tell me if I have this right.
The initial sale is credited to the affiliate via a cookie
Any future sales by the same customer is credited to the affiliate automatically no cookie required.

    @jadams
Each customer that enters the affiliate's site gets a cookie. This cookie will be active for 365 days and will be renewed with each visit so basically, affiliates get commissions for the lifetime of the referral with us.

Please let me know if you have further questions.

Thanks for the reply so basically the affiliate will get paid commission for the lifetime of the cookie.

This would be my concern. Any security conscious internet user will frequently delete cookies. if they are not computer savvy, then many AV programmes etc will do it at a click of a button.

Now if an affiliate is unlucky enough to refer 10 customers who are cookie crunchers, then no re-order commission will be credited, meaning 100% for you and a useless 365 day cookie.

Now surely details of the customer are kept as well as the affiliate, so why can't the affiliate be added to the customer info. Any coder worth his salt could easily have it so Order sent> check box> SAVE>% of total>Affiliate credited.

Or have I missed the point that being to attract business as cheaply as possible, hence the big rewards offered to affiliates for the initial order knowing more often than not, any re-orders is pure profit.

Hi jadams, thanks for sharing your opinion.
Statistic shows that only a small percentage of internet users clean their cookies. I can tell you even more, the average internet user doesn't even know how to delete them, but this is not the main point.
Your concern is completely valid, some affiliates are very much worried about this issue as well, despite the fact that our "re-orders" ratio is sky high.
In order to facilitate affiliates' work, cookies is not the only tracking tool that we provide. We offer affiliates our exclusive White Label services. We build a site and host it for them and the domain can be the affiliates' or ours.
White Labels are designed to receive traffic from one single affiliate and orders will be credited to the White Label's owner even if their cookie was deleted in the past.
This two methods keeps our returning customers ratio among the highest in the industry.
Hope this info is useful for you and other marketers around.

    Cheers!

Thanks Vicky but don't you think a simple tag "referred by" on the customers account is way easier than building white label websites and %100 fairer to the affiliate. A simple input field and an extra column in the DB tables is all it would need.

Here's an example: Mr Smith is referred by Mr X via his white label website. Cheap Fags the company send Mr Smith his order together with a brochure containing contact details and a order hotline number.

Mr X gets his commission and is very happy.

Four weeks later Mr Smith runs out of fags picks up the sales brochure and calls Cheap Fags direct and places order.

Mr X and statistics show he will probably be on the breadline (Facts are stubborn, but statistics are more pliable.) receives nothing. Cheap Fags the company is having a great year and hands out big bonuses to its employees.

Mr X is wondering why all his previous referrals have all given up smoking.

I guess what you saying is
all these affiliate programmes work with the dubious cookie method. That shouldn't mean you can't be the best.

I think what you are offering has high resale potential which is why it attracted my attention, smoking and drinking are ongoing commodities, but relying on a cookie, or the chance the client will re-order from a white label website rather than simply using the telephone, or his account is too high a gamble.

I am of course only assuming you will send the customer contact details, a telephone order number, and future mail/emails containing latest deals.

If the prices are good (I have no idea as none are posted on your website) I can easily think of people/friends who would be interested. However by asking direct I could easily know of any re-order history.

The simple affiliate field on the customers account would save any argument.

It's not a bad idea I must confess, can save hours and hours of tracking work. Nevertheless, we are currently using a different tracking system that, so far, it's working outstandingly.

Of course we do not ban future possibilities. If this current system happens to be out of date at some point, we will consider other options for sure.

Once again, thanks for your suggestions and feedback, it is very important for us.

hehe cookie crunchers :p at this one i must agree with victoria, very few ppl actually delete their cookies, none of my friends know how to do that so i spend my weekends helping them with that stuff hahahaha and trust me, it doesn't matter how many time i explain it, they just don't get it :p and no! they are not stupid just not computer/marketing savvy
i have to say that reorders were kinda' slow the first month, the second month were better & truly, AM SO NOT COMPLAINING TODAY! :D
