e-Commerce SEO

Discussion in 'eCommerce' started by tjordan06, Jul 26, 2011.

I have been optimizing my site for a local business for 18 months now. I am considering moving into some e-commerce.

What is different about SEO for e-commerce? It seems to me that on page content is harder to achieve because there will be less written content on the e-commerce site.
What recommendations do you have for me? Any good resources for me to learn from?

I am just trying to figure out what e-commerce SEO is all about!

    Thank you!

    Tim

When you have an online store, you know that the most important thing is making sure that people come to your store and purchase your items. However, when you are struggling with getting people to your site, there are several things that you can do. The best way to make sure that you get the traffic you need is to optimize your ecommerce store for search engines. This means that people will stumble upon your store when they are searching for products that relate to the products that you sell.
You simply cannot rely on word of mouth or the internet advertising that you can afford in order to get your site in the public eye and to be seen by as many people as possible. This will not work in the way that you think it should, and it will not get you the traffic that you hope. Therefore, it is important that you are able to do much more.

It's basically the same as it is for any other website.  Narrow down your key words.  Do the research and find some low competition key words that relate and have low competition.  Optimize the content on page, Then build links preferably using those keywords as anchor texts on relevant sites.

I've found that it really helps if you make a detailed description of each item that you are selling along with the buy link. If you just put a title of the item with a photo, there's not going to be enough info for the spiders to catch it and index it properly.

Basic stuff really, but when I started I just put the buy it link in one place and all the item details were hidden from the engines and that didn't work so well. It takes a little more time, but if you offer a lot of items it will give the engines a lot to work with and you'll see your pages come up more often in relevant searches.

SEO on e-commerce it is NOT the same like for every other static site. :et's say you have a few hundred or thousands products to sell - every one has their own page on he website. So, let's take an exemple from my own website (it is easier for me) :
Product to sell : Touchscreen Apple iPhone 3GS
    keywords: Touchscreen, Apple, iPhone, 3GS
Description: Touchscreen Apple iPhone 3GS - Here you can find the best price for : Touchscreen Apple iPhone 3GS (just an example)

Than, these keywords have to appear on the page a few times - I have them in the short description of the product, the long (technical) description and one more , on the same page. Make sure the descriptions are not copied from other sites, even if you are selling the same thing. Make sure there is a good picture of the product, or many of them. Make sure you don't crowd to many keywords on one page (2.5-4% of the entire numebr of words on that page is enough). And many man more to be done... on a single page.

Than.. multiply it by the number of products you have for sale and make an estimate of time it will take you to do them all. I have about 4000 on my website.
