So, it's been about a week since Google released the "Custom Search Engine". Anybody created any cool pages/sites using this tool? Of course, I'm going to list mine, but I'd like to see other people's versions so that I can "borrow ideas"... FindingFunnies.com
Eric Enge has a directory of them here if that helps. - Michael <added>Your jokes idea is great!</added>
That is quite a cool example. But, more in "use" than in "looks"... Mark Shuttlworth went up quite a few steps in my eyes when, in an interview, he said that "pretty is a feature". I TOTALLY agree with that, and it's been something that I've been trying to get other people to believe. ESPECIALLY non-techie people. HotMail (sorry, Windows Live Mail) is pretty, GMail isn't. Of course, I still use GMail thanks to limitations HotMail set on me not being a US citizen Oh, and thanks Michael for the "added" comment about the jokes...
From what I understand, they DO rely on Javascript. If you go to the CSE setup page (control panel) you'll see the javascript that you will need to install to implement this. 1 for the search box and 1 for the search results edit: Unless you do it AJAX style (which I've done) in which case there's only 1 section of code that you'll need to add
Sorry, no idea. Why don't you like JS though? Seems to get the job done. Of course, I'm pretty new to the whole web-dev world...
I block all JS with the NoScript FF extension so I don't get any browser trouble with malicious code. Other people have it disabled too. Server side is always better IMO.
And, speak of the person himself, regarding "pretty", go take a look at this article: http://linux.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/10/30/1744232
that's really cool. everybody will use "google" word instead of "internet" word. there will be no internet word in future
