Adobe Illustrator is the best for logo design because of vector.

Use Illustrator as this is a vector software and you can use the logo in all services like web and prints

For logo designing Adobe Illustrator is best because it is purely vector based software and this way you can use your logo anywhere

Use Adobe Fireworks first, learn the program, then move on to Photoshop. If you can't afford Adobe software, use Gimp.

Do not use fireworks to design logos. This is terrible advice. Really a logo should be vector, and thus done in illustrator. But if you're going for free software use GIMP as I linked to before.

Sorry you feel this way. Illustrator is definitely good, but Fireworks I think would be a better app to learn for beginners.

Illustrator, then photoshop. Fireworks isn't recommended for logo making, it's more for web images.

I've always used either Illustrator or Photoshop. Mostly photoshop though, because vectors in Illustrator always give me problems.

I am very surprised to hear some of these recommendations. I have been designing logo's full time for a few years and if I didn't design vector based logo's I would be in big trouble. Exceptions would be if you were looking for web based or small print designs only photoshop would be alright. (like if it was only for a website logo)

If you google free vector software there is some open source but couldn't recommend any as I have always used illustrator. If your logo is going to be used for print or signs you defiantly want to make sure your designs were in some vector based software or you will have to pay someone to vectorize it :)

Just as Chizel stated, a logo must be vectorized, and for that you don't have too many options:

    1- Illustrator
    2- Corel
    3- Inkscape (free)
4- SK1 (free, currently only in Linux)

After you have made the vector, only then, you should use PS or Gimp for finishing your logo.
