What if you want to announce a significant change to a directory?

Such as the directory is now offering something new.

I got an infraction for this today and have submitted to a few more directories before seeing this sticky, so I guess I should expect a few more... what a load of crap!

As others have said, it's not polite to leave no reply and as for sending a PM, fgs get a grip! Sending PM's for every directory submission to should get an infraction for sure! Replying in the thread is the most sensible option.

For a while I tried subscribing to threads as a means to track submissions, but it didn't work for me, as sometimes I subscribe to a thread because I don't have time to action it immediately or am not sure I want to until it gets some feedback from other DP members...

So, another vote for removing that section from the global 'recent posts' index, and for all I care, remove post credits and sig links too if you think people are that desperate to raise their backlink/post count! It's so not about that.

I do agree on that, but I also see the danger of newbies abusing it. I for example have a totally free directory, which is overflown with spam already. I like it when members I know or trust, post their urls, so I can look for them in the submission cue. On the other hand, I will get submissions or comments from spamsite owners, and then simply delete all of their submissions after clicking on an example of their work.

Things seem to have improved a lot over the past 2 weeks. Not sure why, but there are actually good conversations in this section now.

I agree with this completely. For instance, this forum for example, and the introduction forums.

Post count should only be applied to meaningful forums that have information and knowledge growth in mind. I am not saying introductions are not meaningful, infact they are awesome and very much wanted! But it should be done with the idea of welcoming the new person, not increasing post count.

I agree, remove certain categories from the post count and other features. Not everyone cares about those things.

I think that it takes a lot of "tough love" to keep the directory section in line.

Why did I receive an infraction for http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=198673 ?

QUOTE - Description: If you are a directory owner announcing a new directory (or compiling a list of directories), looking for submissions or a user looking for directories to submit to, this is where the request should go.

That is exactly what I was doing. I was informaing users that I had a new directory and requested submissions

Btw. you guys are getting too worked up over this.

How would you feel if your cpanel looked like this? ;)

    Subcategory for anouncements.

Getting too worked up? Maybe if someone could explain to me why I would get an infraction for anouncing a new directory in the Solicitations and Anouncements subcategory I will understand.

Not saying it did or didn't happen, but could it be that you accidentally submitted to the main directories category and a mod moved it after infracting you?

I cant remeber how often I have purchased a service from a thread without even posting on theat particular thread. At the end of the day I wanted to give the seller some good feedback so I decide to give him/her an itrader which requires thread URL and states that (and I quote) "If you did not participate in a deal within this exact thread, your account at this forum will be subject to termination". This inself requires me to open the thread and leave a simple "Pm sent" or "thanx" or whatever.

DP reulations require I make at least ONE post in able to leave an ITRADER

    oh well.....

You can make posts, just make it a post and not something that looks like a cut and paste job.

Whatever the rules are they need to be enforced consistently. So many of the so called rules I seldom see enforced. It almost seems like the only people losing are the ones who follow the rules.

Too true Lenny. I just received a warning because it seems someone thinks I "bumped" my own thread. If answering a question on the thread which deserves an answer is considered "bumping" then whats the point in answering at all ? I mean..if I was posted something like "pm sent" then I would agree ( in fact I done this once and receive any stress) but I answered someone who asked me if it was possible to open up a new category within my directory and I remarked I ll see what i can do when I get home....is this "bumping"?. If yes then I am sorry. If no then I would be interested in the exact definition of "bumping" a thread.
