I agree with techcruser, you should learn Java Script and JQuery both... and if you are planning to do some handon with open platform tools/script then you must be aware about PHP and MySQL.

webDesign means HTML/XHTML & CSS so, that is all you actually need to know to design ANY TYPE of websites. Of course, once you will be able to design websites you should learn JavaScript/JQuery to add some nice features to the sites but that is the second step a webDesigner should take.

If you want to start a web design business, then you should know about the dynamic language tools like JQuery, Java Script etc. to give a better user interface to the user. Because, nowadays nobody prefers a static website only, everyone wants to have dynamic one with an easy to use user interface.

Sorry guys I disagree.  A good solid knowledge of HTML/XHTML & CSS is a good enough starting place to build brochure sites for small businesses.  Offering something like a 6 page brochure site for $99 can get you started.  For more advanced stuff why not outsource it??  Good luck.

Agreed haha. Moral of the story is that everyone likes to see cool javascript effects. And if you want to learn, ignore jquery at first. It is a library for javascript, not a second language, and will only make sense if you know what you're looking at.

Theme building for scripts like wordpress is a good next step as suggested too. That will be a key selling point for someone who can't make custom php scripts.
