    Dominicc, I think you're referring to Google's open directory, @ dmoz.org.

Thanks for all the great ideas guys. Since there are so many experts here, can you explain to me why there are so many of these free directories about? Of course I'm not going to complain if people will link to my site for free, but after submitting to about 10 of them, I have to wonder what's in it for them? Also, what's in it for me if only the first page is cached by google and the drill down levels aren't. Can someone explain this before I go ahead and submit to another dozen or so? Thanks!

Get backlinks from directory sites, blogs, articles, forums, and do exchange links.

Avoid duplicate content so that sites will be indexed immediately

Thanks, guys. But I guess my question is, what's in it for the people setting up the free submit/no reciprocal directories? There must be something or people wouldn't be doing it, right?

people set free directories, because the content is filled by other people, so the site is self-growing, you can sell paid links(sponsorship) from the site, once it has some PR. MSN loves directories, placing link for free will raise you popularity on msn nearly instantly.

The great feeling of fullfilment (sp) we get by giving the little guys free links on google....

Joking aside running a directory is a pain in the ass, not really any money in the free ones (maybe $1 or so a month from a featured link) however if after a year of running a free directory google takes a shine to you and gives you decent PR you can get rid of the free option and start selling only paid links which people will buy in the hope of having PR passed down.

Well, I guess that answers it - looks like a pretty long-term investment. Thanks, guys. Here's hoping getting into some of these early will pay off! Sweb, what you said about content was interesting. One of the directories I submitted to actually placed a minimum of 500 characters on your description. That really is a great way of adding content and beefing up the context of your link, I assume.

Here's just hoping that google drills down as far as gift baskets :) And thanks visio for that article link!

I am not sure if this is the best method or not???

I just pinged my site 1 time using pingoat.com and within 4 days my site was indexed.

I am open for suggestions or ideas on if this is not the best method? But for me it has worked really well.

    Hi Shelley,

Did you end up getting your site indexed?

I have been asking around on a few different forums, if this is a bad method of indexing sites, and haven't recieved any bads comments yet. So far they have all been positive.

If it get's your site indexed in Google then its good for me!
