    Yeah I guess so.
But there is some kind of option in ebay which will enable you to get listed in indian ebay website. I am not sure though! Just check with their customer support!

Oh I will! Their GUI only allowed you to choose a location within India. I don't think it ever crossed their mind that someone from outside the country would want to list a product there...

But here's the issue: I think for me to use ebay in India, I would need to actually have an Indian banking account or put money in India somewhere. How can I do that?

For example, I noticed that Ebay India requires you to use something called PaisaPay? What is that and can I, an American, sign up for it?

Also, when you sign up for Ebay India, it requires a PIN code. What in the world is that?

    And thx again...

I am not sure as an non-Indian resident you can sign up for paisa pay. Paisa Pay was brought into front line service after the paypal starting playing with the Indian clients with absurd rules thanks to violating the RBI policies.

I don't think that I can sign up for it. Basically, what I'm looking for is a way that someone can pay in rupees. I haven't found a way yet!

If anyone knows of any way, I would appreciate it...

Have you tried 2Checkout Payment Solution ( as they accept Debit cards and Creditcards ) so most of the Indians can pay using it, or try to integrate any of the Indian payment Gateways like CCevenue,EBS,transecute, direcpay etc. Offering Direct Internet banking and accepting indian banks Deibt card can surely boost your sales .

PayPal is not popular yet in India. If you want to get in India then you might have to use credit, visa card. As you know India is a multilingual country so if you want to run your business you might choose English because it getting popularity in this country. As well as this is notify to you that India is biggest potential market for online business.

India is a tough market to break into with IM, and many advertisers don't bother because the online sales is not comparable to countries like the US and UK

Thank you for all the great ideas!

I tried calling the CCavenue number here in the U.S. and they never returned my call. I haven't had much luck getting hold of anyone yet.

So all of the above will let a person in India pay in rupees? I think that's the key, right?

Oh, and I wanted to ask: are all of the above well-known names in India? For example, 2Checkout looks like an American company. Do you think people from India would more likely buy from an Indian company such CCavenue or direcpay?

    Again, thx...

Yes, I know. In fact, I was just reading an article that the ebook market there is in its infancy. But I have all to gain and nothing to lose assuming the costs are relatively low.

I've ready that there are around 30-50 million English speakers there, so I don't see how I can ignore it. Eventually the ebook mkt will catch on. Strategic positioning, eh?

Basically That's right, We Indians need easy and trust-able way to pay the money. In India Credits Cards are not much used ( due to the fact that it has lots of procedures, requirements and cost more ) instead most of them use International Debit Cards ( Visa and Master ) and Net Banking, So if you can find a payment gateway accepting this two you can surely bring good success in India.

Paypal usage is now limited with the way Paypal has made laws for Indian users. Cash on delivery, Net banking, Credit card are the best options.

I read a little bit on the International Debit Cards. These let you buy in many countries around the globe and then it handles the currency conversion for you, correct? In other words, you could by something from France and then Visa/Mastercard converts it to rupees and pulls money out of your account. Is that how it works?

I'm asking because that is essentially what 2Checkout does, except they handle that themselves. In other words, if a lot of Indian people use these Int'l Debit Cards, I'm not sure there is much point in 2Checkout if I understand right?

Yes It works the way you said, 2Checkout mostly does that for you :), you need a payment gateway anyway to accept this cards.
Also note that International Debit cards also has variants ( like VISA shopefree, VISA Silver, VISA GOLD etc..) so sites accepts this card and some not when buying internationally. So always need a Payment gateway to accept most of the Cards.

Indians are quite reluctant to buying ebooks most of the time. we get tons of free traffic from India but the conversion rate there on any goods that require a credit card is extremely low, so most of the time we show CPV or CPC for them.

I see your point, but I still think I can convert. I offer my ebooks at a very low price, etc. But maybe I'm naive!

One thing I do is allow people to buy the book off of my site using Paypal and that is where I actually get most of my sales. The advantage to this is that they get a pdf and thus don't even need an ebook reader. Which of these solutions will allow them to buy the pdf ebook directly from me?

I guess 2Checkout. But will any of the Indian based companies do that? (I need at least an html-based button like Paypal gives you.)

I guess most of the Indian based payment Gateways like CCevenue,EBS,transecute, direcpay etc and 2Checkout will allow placing of buttons like paypal does.
