Wordpress with the domain name is recommended. It is better not to use wordpress subdomain.

I had recently set up an experiment. Given that there are now lots of 'content syndication' tools I set up a WP.com blog and a blogger.com blog Needless to say, after adding a few banners to my WP.com blog and auto posting it was banned, but blogger kept on going and infact started sending me good traffic as well. I like WP as a stand alone platform, but if I had to choose between WP.com and Blogger, it would be blogger, hands down.

Blogger is fine to get started for those unfamiliar with the web. It is HIGHLY user-friendly, but you sacrifice alot of customization. Once you get your feet wet, most people soon outgrow Blogger. The only time I would go with Blogger is if I did not want to spend any money, as Wordpress (the free version) does not allow monetization (and the free Blogger "blogspot" accounts do).

Well, Blogger is not the best one recommended as you cannot use any tools for your professional or business blogging. With wordpress, you have all the tools that are necessary for your blogging needs.
Blogging with wordpress is one of the best options I like as you have hundreds of plugins. When you talk about free blogs, go with wordpress as you can easily move to selfhosted wordpress later
