This is my first post in here. And I want to ask a question about the servers selection. as recently im trying to build a movie site which didnt provide online movies but the links to other site for online watching, just like the site letmewatchthis.com and im totally a freshman and I bought a dedicated servers which is 300/month, when the site is not completely finish. which is very stupid. LOL and 20 days after that the site is still not complete. and a programmer that I hire told me the dedicated servers is absolutely wasting money. and I think so, as at least I should bought servers after the site is completed. and he also suggest me rent a hosting after the site is completed. and what i want to ask is that enough for a movie site that only provide movie links(all together about 2GB ) and for a hosting, how much traffic it could handle? I mean the access of the site will be very slow when a lot people access at the same time ? how should we choose servers or web hosting? basic on the traffic? is there any rule or indicator about it? thanks!~ LOL
ok... so no offense but you definitely made the freshman mistake. You bought a dedicated server before your site was finished. The very most you should have done was buy shared hosting, then set the entire domain to be password protected so it wouldnt show up to anyone but you. So once it is finished, I suggest you get a VPS, I would say a vps with at least 1 GB ram, 25 GB disk, unmetered internet port like 10Mbit, and at least 1GHz for cpu. I know we offer that, but I definitely would not go and get a dedi. not until your vps is starting to not be able to handle the site. You can get VPS's pretty cheap too... like $5+ cheap lol
really thanks for you answer, I was thinking nobody will reply my post. thanks a lot. another question, that is I saw the vps hosting, reseller hosting and web hosting. which one is better? for the "1 GB ram, 25 GB disk, unmetered internet port like 10Mbit" I saw a site provide this at about 30 dollars per month. but the web hosting only cost 10 per month. is this mean the this vps will be better than the web hosting? like the access speed to the site in vps hosting will be faster?
Well let me put it this way, BassHost.com offers that vps for about $5-$10 And by web hosting they really mean shared hosting (meaning small accounts that are hosted on a vps along with as many other clients they want to put on there) Reseller hosting means you can resell the disk space and bandwidth that you are paying for. Meaning... maybe you get a reseller, your site isn't very big and not making a whole lot of money and you aren't using very much resources. So you resell the rest of your unused resources to other ppl, and recoop the cost of the package. VPS are honestly best. Here's why: you can do pretty much whatever you want with them, you have more ram than shared or reseller hosting, and you have more bandwidth. For instance, you can get a huge amount of bandwidth for a very small price because it is getting cheaper for ISP's to give bandwidth. Vps's are faster because they are YOURS, and not being shared (thus shared hosting) with other clients. A vps is on a dedicated server which hosts other VPS's too. However if the company is smart, then they will watch how many VPS's they put on a single dedicated server because if you put too many on, then it makes it so that your sites will all be very slow. For your need, I would say you could get by with the vps i said above, i am pretty sure basshost.com has that vps for about $5 a month.
thanks for answering! now I know a bit more about the differen between the hosting. and just check the site you told me, its really cheap. thanks. I really need to change to a cheaper hosting next month, as dedicated servers cost me 300/mon and site didnt finished yet. and thanks a gain~!
no prob. and yea they are cheap. lol and im glad i could help you in understanding the difference between the hosting solutions.
I'd look into rackspace as well. They charge you for how much you use, but you will still have a reasonably powerful server.
You can might want to try some free web hosting like instantfreesite.com. You won't have to spend a single cent for you to try it out and they have a limited offer of 50% off for the upgrade going on right now if ever you feel the need. They offer instant free cpanel web hosting, has regular backups and has RVSitebuilder pro.
This all depends upon the number of expected visits per day, simple formula is to get bandwidth is webpage+video etc size * monthly visitors , A VPS can work initially but ultimately you have to go to dedicated server. For cheap VPS and performance I recommend Shopaserver.com to start as they have helpful and friendly technical support, best suits to beginners.
There's no problem to host such website on shared environment, the main concern would be daily traffic on your website. if you have high traffic generated, vps or upper would be suggested.
