No more DMOZ in Google

And let me add to that...
"We believe when searching the web, we believe you should first see sponsored results."
In the browser here on my laptop, I see a total of 6 sponsored results, and 1 organic result. In other words, these results were placed their by humans who bid on the position JUST LIKE A DIRECTORY.

 

Google had made it almost impossible to even locate the directory awhile back. It was only a matter of time before they removed it altogether. I seriously doubt many people searched the directory. And if you know of DMOZ, you would probably just go to dmoz.org anyway instead of using Google's version of it.

 

This is an interesting development. I remember seeing Google Directory only yesterday at www.google.com/dirhp

 

This was pretty much a foregone conclusion IMO... notwithstanding the ambiguity David mentioned in the OP, Google was gonna have a hard time whining about scraped sites when "their" directory was a dated carbon-copy of another. Just as well to end that ambiguity.

I don't think it indicates Google holds less appreciation for the role directories can play at sorting wheat from chaff... just ends what had become a rather awkward relationship.

 

DMOZ is now filled with low quality sites, and Google no longer wants to mirror the crap.

 

Yeah, why mirror outdated content when you already display it in your own SE.

 

Google should have done this a long time ago, why Google would clone another site when they are agaisn't duplicated contents in the first place.

I still find web directory to be a better place to find sites, a good web directory that is well manage.

 

The saying went something like "do no evil" not "don't be a hypocrite".

Site explorer is closing because Yahoo uses bing now and Bing Webmaster tools has a much better function for it.
and as far as DMOZ on google goes. It really just doesn't make sense when Google spends its time on a search algorithm to make a much more functional "directory".

 

Everyone get ready for internet2, the crappy commercialized version where everything is paid advertising and you have to to pay for access to websites. It'll basically be a TV that you can type on.

 

Looks like DOMZ is a step closer to the dump, Good riddance.. Just a heap of outdated, broken links, abandoned, junk. To bad for those editors still selling links, time to find a new "hobby".

 

i think Google has a great plan with the directory. there were many people who were using Dmoz. actually i can't understand why Google have shut it down. also it was not that kind of popular. Right?

 

Not sure you got the story... Dmoz was not shut down by google. Google scrapped it's own directory, which was no more than a sporadically updated copy of the dmoz database licensed for such use. This is an anticlimactic event... Google had long since buried it so deep in their structure you had to be searching for it to find it anyway.

 

I think that DMOZ made themselves irrelevant due to their FREE model. To some, making a profit is so "unenlightened", but profit works. Profit means that you have something worth maintaining and improving.

 

Doesnt affect my hobby one bit and if anything, perhaps the obsession with getting listed in DMOZ will mean webmasters will back off with the crap submissions and spam.

That way i can just focus on doing what i do, which is categorically listing sites for the end user. No more.....no less

 

Dmoz still makes a decent link, maybe it's not worth now as much as before but i dont think it's worthless.

 

Actually, without the hype of those spam submissions, if AOL sees the numbers drop too low, they might scrap the project as a failure. Then you may need to practice your hobby on one with better stats as far as spam, dead links, and crap go.

Whenever it shuts down the editors aren't the only ones that'll need another hobby. Q added 6 sites at dmoz, then spent 5 years and 2670 posts in DPs dmoz section bitching about it. Even your sig's about it. Lol. Obsess much junior?
