    Hi DP.

Thought I would share some knowledge. So ask a person who makes a living off flipping websites and domain names anything :)

Depends on your skills. If you know how to setup websites, you should develop simple micro niche websites. Make sure to use .com or .net domain names. Then sell those.
If you have money however, or don't want to develop websites yourself, I suggest you buy established websites and resell for higher profit.

I use eBay (getting saturated these days), flippa, local forum for webmasters and sometimes DP for selling. You can often buy good websites off ebay and sell for more profit to locals or on flippa.

Thanks for doing this thread :)

When looking to buy a domain name, are you more likely to purchase a keyword oriented domain, or one with a "snappy" cool name? Do you worry about PageRank when buying a domain, or do you buy low, build up, and then sell high?

I have dealed with both snappy cool names and keyword names. I have best experience selling snappy names at ebay, but it is much too crowded unless you have a really good one :) I sell keyword domain names here and at flippa, they usually sell for higher, depending on keyword. So find out where you want to sell first.
If you go for snappy names, you should register them yourself, unless you can find some good ones with PR or age.

Aged domain names are becoming a hot trend these days, so if you find some that have good keywords or sounds good and you can get them cheap and resell, do it.

Regarding pagerank.. On this forum I see loads of offers for good PR domain names. I have seen PR2 and PR3 go for $10-20. If they are good domain names, buy them and resell. But make sure to check if the rank is valid.

You will also have to sell them fast, as PR will drop when there is no content on website, so if you are looking to resell domains with pagerank solely, you should be able to sell fast.

So it is always better to sell a site than just a domain?

Yes, sell sites if you know how to. However, sometimes you will see domain deals which are to good to skip.. Buy them and resell higher :) It will make good extra income

Thanks again for taking the time to hold this thread (+rep).

How much on average do you earn per site, and per domain? On that same note, how many purchases and sales do you take part in each day? I'm at the point where speaking logically I would need to do some 25-50 transactions a day to effectively pay overhead (assuming around $10 profit per domain).

On a completely different topic, what methods do you take to protect yourself against chargebacks via PayPal and the sort? Since domain names and websites aren't tangible, I've had some profit loss on a few sales that ended badly. I've been forced to change some of my policies (only selling to users with a high iTrader here, and the others via a 3rd party marketplace which acts as an escort). Are there other solutions I haven't found yet? :p

Thanks again, some pretty informational stuff here so far.

For sites I can earn some $50+ per sale, really depends if you can find the right buyer. People pay what they think it's worth you will be surprised. For domain names I just go for $10-20 profit each sale. I do not work weekends.. Or well.. I do let auctions run, but I don't spend much time at PC, so weekends have low earnings. Transactions per day vary a lot, can be 1-20.. Also depends on how much I can handle. Secret is to not sell crap, that will not get you any buyers. Buy low, sell high. If you cannot get rid of a particular website or domain, just reduce looses as much as possible.

Domain and site flipping will NOT make you rich.. In any way.. But if it's done right and you get a customer database, you can make a small living. Some days are bad, some are really good.. So it's not a reliable income either, you have to work. If you have a bad day, spend some more time the next day, learn from mistakes.. If you have a good day, you can lean back some the next day and relax a little.. It is like a dayjob, you have to work... Transfer files, domains, setting it up, making auctions, managing payments etc.
I earn from multiple places, but almost all money end up in paypal in some way or another.. As i said, I use ebay, dp and flippa..

Because you are selling from so many websites, you will have to keep things sorted out. Make an excel file where you put in all info on a website you bought for reselling.. Login info for cpanel (get a reseller account somewhere to host everything).. Write where domain is registered.. Any fees you have had..
When site or domain has sold, write in the excel file what you sold it for, paypal fees, buyer info etc etc.. Organize stuff, that is one important tip when you scale up..

As I said, get a reseller account.. Dont buy some unlimited cheap account, buy from a reliable webhost, or setup a vps with whm/cpanel if you know how to.. Now, when you make a sale.. Say that you can host their website for a fixed monthly amount.. That gives a good income too.. Dont make a hosting company, just host them privately.. It gives me SOME stable dollars to get going :) That is my only stable income so far.. But not my biggest income, that comes from flipping..

As for chargebacks and stuff.. Paypal is fine for most cases.. If you get scammed once in a while, bad luck.. It does not happen to me often though, and if it does I can sometimes reverse domain push, depending on registrar.. But you might have to make phone calls etc etc..
For larger payments, use escrow.. That way you are 100% secured from scammers.. However escrow is not worth it for <$500 payments imo.

My question :) How much budget do you think one should have to start in flipping sites? Or does one starts by creating the sites himself and flipping that first before moving to bigger range sites?

Unless I get my hands on a huge website, I don't bother changing adsense id.. However, I often keep them on the website, so buyer can see that it can make money with adsense.. I don't spend any time doing SEO.. Sometimes the one I bought it from have done that.

$100 can give you a great start.. You can acquire some good established websites for that.. However, you can also build some yourself for free and just pay for domain names.. Depends on if you want to resell or build yourself..

I started small.. Bought ~$20 websites and scaled up as I earned more..

Really depends on competition.. If there is no competition and everyone on page one has low pagerank, backlinks and poor seo, then I would pay anywhere between $10-100 for one of these domain names.
There are a lot of things to consider.. If it's a trademark, they drop greatly in value.. Same goes with micro niches, which won't remain for long, like events and such, things that will not last.. So really hard to say, but if they are all good I would say high end $xx :)

Yes PR3 and PR4 exact match is worth much more :) However, I would still need to see the niche and domain name before I could tell you what I think it is worth.. Essentially, domain names are worth what the buyers and sellers agree with, I just have my personal opinions and experiences to base my prices off ;)

Hi, blomstervand .. thanks for this awesome thread..

I wasn't aware that you can reverse domain push. Will godaddy support that as well? what about netfirms? I'm new in this business and this is worrying me a lot. I would like to use moneybookers instead of paypal. What initiative would you suggest to minimize the chances of being scammed?

Could you define "good websites" in other words if you looked at a list of 10 websites for sale what are the main factors you would take into account?

This is something I am definitely interested in. How do you determine what domain names will turn a quick profit? How quickly is it possible to make a profit by flipping a domain/site? Is this something that takes days, weeks, months?

    Thanks,

    Lisa

eBay is filled with websites that are all copies now a days. So a good website would be unique at least. Have a relevant domain name, .com or .net is what you are after. Also if you find a website, even with small traffic, but with traffic from google for low price, that is also worth looking for. Generally try to look out for websites you could see potential in yourself :)

Before you make a descent income, it could take months. However if you do well, you could profit a little from day one :)
As I said before, domain names which you would buy yourself are usually a good deal. Watch out for pr0 domains with no traffic which costs more that base price of a domain name.
