Particular need : a VPS with weak power but > 200 GB disk

    Hello everyone !

I have a very unusual need, I need a VPS (not a shared hosting plan), with a HUGE disk space, over 200 GB.

No need for super-powerful hardware, only the disk storage would be requiring.
Sadly, to have over 200 GB of free hard disk, there are only hyper-expensive offers around there.

But, well, I'm not omniscient, I may have missed valuable hosts.

Please, would you have a host to recommend, that's not going to ruin me with a super-high monthly cost ? :)

Thank you very much if you can help me with a recommendation ! :)

Oh, I must mention it. I know of the existence of Dreamhost.
But must we mention a web hosting company not even providing their VPSes and dedis with mysql, phpmyadmin and Cpanel/Plesk bundled, even if we offer to pay for it ?
    No.

The problem is that with that much disk space, the cost is almost always going to be high, because you will be using much of the server's disk space by yourself. It leaves less disk space for other users. For example, on a lot of the shared/reseller servers I provision, I'll normally have anywhere 1 - 1.5TB of space provisioned for the users. Regardless of how much power, RAM, etc. you might need, you're still talking about 1/4 of my server's disk space for one user, and you probably don't intend to pay for 1/4 of the server's price. :)

We put considerably more space on a VPS server, but I was using that as an example. I haven't worked up a custom quote on this, but I think that something in the $40-50 range (without control panel) would be a pretty normal price for this, just recalling some other quotes I have worked up in the past. That might even be on the cheaper end from any reliable provider.

Have you considered a old cheap dedicated server? For around that same price ($40-50), you could probably swing an old Celeron or Pentium 4 server, or even a older Xeon or Core2Quad for that price, with a hard drive around that size, a couple gigs of RAM, etc. An Atom server would work well too, but the Core2Quads would eat any Atom server for breakfast.

We can help you a lot better if you let us know a few things:

    1) What do you plan on hosting where you need that kind of space?
    2) What is your budget? You say "ultra expensive" but don't really define that price at all. You most definitely aren't going to get that kind of space in the $10-15 or even $20 range for that matter.

I'm sure that with such amount of the disc space you need to start considering small dedicated server. I think that VPS with such configuration might cost you very big money.

Thank you for your replies, you two :)

Well, after all, why not a dedi, an old cheap dedicated server, but then it would have to be a managed one, I don't have the required level to handle installation and on top of all keep watch of software updates and prevention of safety risks.

I was asked what kind of websites : a variety. In case it's a prob, there would be one adult one (sadly, the biggest moneymaker, despite small traffic, but money is money), then a few small blogs, then a website selling my archived creations.
Not much traffic overall, 10k per day at best, with a cache system to handle spikes.

Besides the huge disk space, in case bandwidth usage is an issue, a max of 1 GB/day should do (if I sell well, more, but in average, less than that).

In this regard, what would match, in your opinion ? :)

I looked at WSWD.net, but 250 GB starts at almost 1k yearly...

Why do you believe that will be expensive to have managed dedicated server. Even you can get cheap dedicated servers and cheap management in different places and in any case VPS with such configuration can be much more expensive for you.

    You're welcome!!

Well those are our list prices. There are always discounts for DP members. :) As well, the cost of throwing a 250GB hard drive in any those servers is absolutely minimal, or free. I wasn't trying to sell you my services though, just trying to provide you some general information, and possibly give you a place to look besides VPSs.

As GreenOliveTree said, management services can be purchased separately, or even say once a month, or once every few months as you need it.

If let say cheap openvz out there is $6.99/mo + 200 GB Disk Space [$36.00] = $42.99/mo or $472.89/year the next question would be what you gonna put inside those 200GB something legal or illegal?

Hello again, after a long time.

I thought I could at least post an update after leaving without saying anything : for the moment, a friend lent me some space on his server for the most space-consuming data, so, for the moment, I can continue with my current web hosts.

The future might be different of course, we'll see how it's going eventually.
But for now, let's say my thread is on hold, I no longer need a new hosting plan so far.

get a low-end dedi (with Intel Atom / Core2Duo) and a 250 GB SATA HDD, that would be the most affordable solution, (around $50-60/month), most VPS host are using RAID setup, so 200 GB of disk space will cost a lot more with VPS.

What about your budget and other other low specs that you're talking about ?

and for what purpose you're going to use this VPS ?

    Kind Regards
