Dmoz is one of the largest, if not THE largest, online directory. It can take ages to get approved, and it is a bit hard. Dmoz does not really improve rankings or anything, today it is more of a status symbol i would say.
Dmoz is the most comprehensive human-reviewed directory site over the web. And as far the Google crawling is concern, Dmoz can be taken as a starting point. So if your site is listed in Dmoz then you can expect a regular crawling of your site.
Agree with that, but that is because of dmoz high PR. If you want to get indexed by google, there are much faster ways. And to get crawled regularly, just build backlinks and update site often.

I wouldn't waste your time on DMOZ. As others have mentioned, it used to take months and months to get a site accepted. And now, I'm not entirely sure that they even take new submissions (I could be wrong, but it seems like it's there primarily for historical reasons at this point). But once upon a time, DMOZ was a big deal, and it was the primary competitor to Yahoo! Directory.
