You should put your website links from where you get back more traffic. Like put your links on popular directories, on best social book marking sites, put your best content article on article submission sites. It will all increase your website traffic and website's PR also.

Can't really say which is best, all are equivalent. "best" or not is depend on the site quality

Nowadays google gives more power to contextual links rather than to blogroll link, so I would definitely try to get contextual links.

Contextual links - means the link is in context to what you want to rank for. Say you make a forum signature with a link, in patrick0001's post above his Free Business Directory link is a contextual link because it links to a page about business directories.

The easiest way to do this is to place guest content on someone else's site or pay them as a form of advertising to do a placement on their site. The blog includes your link in a keyword imbedded in the actual text. The original site owner gets free materials and you get a powerful link and perhaps a bit of traffic as well. If you have the funds, you can simplify this by paying the blog owner to place your link on their site as a form of advertising or you can outsource the guest posting to someone who specializes in the service.

From my understanding when it comes to SEO we are talking about rankings and not traffic. A link in the blogroll is OK but you really want the link to appear to be more natural and having a blog write about you and have some links to something relevant on your site looks more natural and sets your site to look as an authority. In my experience it is best to place links in content on sites where the niche is the same as yours or where talking about your niche would be appropriate . What i mean is if you are a site about fashion you want a link on other sites about fashion or in a post about fashion, a post in a site about lets say living on a budget where the post is how to find good fashion on a budget would be good, and not a site that is about video games
keep this in mind your site will please the Google Lord
