Can someone please explain to me in the most simplest definition what bounce rate really means? It seems like whenever I go to my analytics, I often ignore this info because I don't know how to use it. Thanks guys!
Hi dear, Bounce rate is the percentage of the visitors who went out from first page without viewing another pages. for example your site gets 120,000 visits in one month and 80000 went out without viewing another pages then bounce rate is 0.66 or 66%. Means visits that went out from first page divided by total no. of visits.
Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality - a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren't relevant to your visitors. The more compelling your landing pages, the more visitors will stay on your site and convert. You can minimize bounce rates by tailoring landing pages to each keyword and ad that you run. Landing pages should provide the information and services that were promised in the ad copy. http://www.google.com/support/analytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=81986
@roza it is bad in a sense that it means people went to your site and did not like it and went straight out of it. So maybe your landing page is not so cool, or you are lacking enough incentives to push people further into your site.
What if you have a high bounce rate, but long time on site? Wouldn't that mean the content on the landing page was compelling enough to read through entirely?
The bounce rate depends on the nature of your site. If you addresses the visitor's issue on the page they land on, they're less likely to visit other pages on your site. A news site is another example - people read an article and move on, resulting in a high bounce rate. A site with various tutorials should have a low bounce rate since. So the answer to the question - is a high bounce rate bad - is...it depends on the site.
Not really - one of my sites has a bounce rate of 91% - I get lots of repeat visitors who read just one page. It's ok for the site because it is about current events, so it all depends on your site. 51% sounds ok, especially if it is a blog.
Bounce is a very important parameter for site owners. It tells basically you what percentage of your visitors "bounce" after landing on your site (for example, they just visit a page and leave before you click to another page of your site).
Looking at your bounce rate and length of time on site can quickly tell you what site or pages need the most work.
