SEO is 10% on page and 90% off page

I am starting to feel like SEO is much more about off page rather than on page. It seems you can optimize a page in 10min or so, but the real work comes in when you do your off page link building, forum submission, directory submission, article submission etc.

I agree with what you are saying.

If you want to put the percentages to time, then it would be more like 2% on page, and 98% of page.

Like you said, optimising a page can take 10 minutes, however doing the rest (link bulding ect) can take months!

I don't actually agree since google is giving more weight on the content with the panda.
I might say it will be 30%/70 %

If I have an EMD, with 3 different pages, such as a privacy, about and contact page (which is a must) - with maybe 3-5 articles posted on it at 500 words each (targeting the EMD keywords of course) - you can rank that site on the first page atleast with little to NO OFF-PAGE SEO whatsoever..

So, with that being said, I would reverse what you're saying above with 90% being on-page and 10% being off-page.

There are several ways to look at that, but, at the end of the day, it would come down to a few other factors before you can determine the percentage of on-page and off-page you have to do, in order to get a site to where you want it to be in the Search Engines.

Yeah, it have always been this way, however on-page optimization can help a lot for moving and staying at the top. It also depends a lot on competition.

I can rank a site with an exact match domain and hardly any content. So I think it's a bit more complex than that.

I think we have a lot of things to do with on-pages SEO. One of the most important on-pages technique is links structure that let SE bot can crawl your site better. Other is choose good keywords, good title and description. And as I think, the most important on-pages is content, content is always a King.

Yeah I agree. Onpage seems to help with that initial boost in the SERPS but to really get anywhere you need to do some off page SEO.

your so called "off page seo" is what people in the real world call marketing and advertising ;)

I think both methods are vital for improving your site in search results of a search engine... But, first and foremost thing is On page for the site and then after it comes off page.. Its different thing that off page takes months and even year to promote the things but its a continuous process, so one must continue it. On the Contrary, on page you need to change some things after applying it first with the passage of time.

In my opinion, the Ration is : 30% / 70%

I also disagree since page content is crucial to Google ranking. Writing good articles, making sure you do tests with where you put ads on the page, make sure all your meta tags are right, making sure you have all the social plugins integrated, etc..
