I just bought an absolute bottom of the range HTC Wildfire. I really don't need/use a mobile phone, and bought it mostly to use as a GPS when I'm riding my bike. The screen resolution is crap (which I was prepared for), and it's no good for games... but it was dirt cheap (AUD $150), and if I trash it, I'll just go buy another one :)

Various reasons. I need the "Next G" network where I live. Which means the best way for me to buy a phone is to buy a Telstra branded model.

    And...
So... The Telstra branded Wildfire S still isn't available in AU. And it's more than twice the price of the "old" Wildifire.
Welcome to the world of Australian telecommunications :D

User of Xperia 10 here.. I'm thinking of buying Xperia Play in few months.. If you are looking for mid range solutions, you can get Wildfire S or Samsung Galaxy Ace.. But I personally recommend that you wait for a couple of months for Xperia mini pro, it is going to be a pretty nice mid range phone with hardware qwerty keyboard, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon chipset (ARM v7) with 1GHz scorpion CPU and Adreno 205 GPU.
Way better than Galaxy Ace or Wildfire S.

Not modifying. Its a completely new phone with new architecture. Its shares the same basic specs as the flagship Xperia Arc, same CPU and GPU but with smaller screen, lower MP Camera. The current one is X10 mini pro, that's right.

Motorola Defy is a good phone for its price, but it uses 800 MHz cortex A8 CPU and comes with Eclair/Froyo as opposed to Xperia Mini pro that will come loaded with Gingerbread and 1Ghz Scorpion CPU with Adreno 205 GPU.

If you can wait a couple of months, its worth waiting for Xperia mini pro.

PS: Once you get the phone rooted and install a custom ROM, you can easily overclock the scorpion to 1.4 GHz.

Wow i did a little research but the pricing of the xperia mini pro doesnt seem to be that in the mid range ...

are u also aware of this one Spice Mi-410 also known as Huawei IDEOS X6 internationally it seems to be the best phone for its price it comes with 1GHz Scorpion processor, Adreno 205 GPU, Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon

I believe SE hasn't announced the price of new Mini/Mini Pro. So what you see is pure speculation. There is no reason believe that the prices of new models will be far and higher than the launch price of existing X10 Mini/Mini Pro models.

I don't use Spice, in fact I avoid them like plague. Have you heard someone saying that they were really burnt by someone or something? Well I was burnt by spice, they sold me a faulty phone that didn't work properly right out of the box, then blamed me for fault and refused to replace it. No Idea about Huawei phone.

Batteries usually run longer on gingerbread, so I dont think it will be a problem as it was with X10 mini/mini pro.

This is the battery specs for Mini Pro 2011:

    Standard battery, Li-Ion 1200 mAh
    Stand-by- Up to 331 h (2G) / Up to 340 h (3G)
    Talk time- Up to 5 h 40 min (2G) / Up to 5 h 25 min (3G)
Music play- Up to 29 h

PS: If you ask me, it doesn't matter who makes the device. Its about how a company treats it's customers.. Spice has worst possible customer support, I can never recommend anyone to buy anything from them.. But ultimately decision rests on you, the buyer.

This is the problem with android, there are so many models, specs and price range to choose from, it's mind boggling. While on the other hand things are pretty simple with iOS, BB or Symbian.. Way to easy to pick a phone.

I'd recommend the HTC sensation although I know it's not mid range. Ideally, you're best placed figuring this out yourself as you know what you want and most sites should have some comparison feature that will allow you pick the one with the required bits n' bobs for the price you want to pay.
