Is it a good idea to use links pointing to authority sites?

I have read that it is a good idea to place links on one's web site that point to authority sites that are of related content. Is this correct? For example, if I have a blog dealing with starting a business, linking out to a site such as the Small Business Administration, which has a page rank of 9, will help my site rank better (everything else being equal). Is this true? And if it is, should the links pointing from my site to the authority sites be dofollow or nofollow links? I would be grateful for any advice on this topic.
    Thank you very much!

Yes. Its correct. If your outlinks link to good authority sites, google automatically will give more trust to your site too.

Should my outlinks be follow or nofollow links or does it matter?

    Thank you!

I never like to put any links out to any sites that aren't either my own or affiliate sites but I've heard that too. I haven't had any beneficial results from it myself.

Placing it dofollow will let your link juice out..So you can with no follow.. But check out what kind of authority sites they are. Coz you dont want to link to a site which is in a bad neighborhood. Also it will be better to not use any anchor text

Why shouldn't I use anchor text? Isn't it unnatural not to use anchor text?

You should link to what would benefit your readers. The rest will take care of itself.

I don't you think putting nofollow of outbound will let google know that you are cheating google and will not provide you authority to your site as the whole point of adding a outbound link in your content is to gain some authority from google. Its the real visitor that you should care about.

I've seen people do this. It makes your links seem less spammy since your linking to an authority.

For an example you are looking for an antivirus and came to a blog which is about anti viruses and fortunately you know Norton Antivirus which is very famous and if you find a link on the site about Norton antivirus you will feel more comfortable that the blog is trust worthy and i can click also other links available on the blog.

When you give an outbound link from a authority site the visitors coming to your website will feel comfortable that this guy gives true information.

This is one thing I know for sure is good practice. Of course you don't want to overdo it either. If I'm talking about a new Apple tablet for example and link to apple.com from my article then this will in fact have a positive impact, make the article more relevant and also instill trust in viewers/readers of that article because they become aware that what I'm writing is in fact honest and sincere and they are not being mislead.

What I mean by not overdoing it is, if I mention the word "Apple" say 4 different times in an article for example it's only necessary to link to that particular authority site once, this is sufficient.

It actually helps you and your readers too if you refer them to other information relevant to your website's. If possible, get backlinks from authority sites too. They make for great off-page SEO technique too.

YES,Authority links are links that are placed within your website content that come from trusted websites that are highly ranked. The superior rank is usually due to a large number of inbound links.Authority Links In Your Content

The site is viewed as an authority to users because it contains good information on a particular topic (or topics, such as Wikipedia) and enjoys a large number of followers; it is the place people go when they are seeking valuable advice or facts about something. But further than the people popularity aspect, specific algorithms provide an ‘official’ stamp of approval.
