The bar can still be raised like a combination of post counts and rep points to make the siggy do follow. For e.g. post counts more than 10000 and rep points more than 500 or even 1000. That will surely reward long term dp loyalists and keep the spammers at bay. Hope Shawn is listening :)

The thing is they get banned - ban expires and they get back to spam again . Not a very effective way to defend . I think more spammers might move to premium , get banned and then quit after realigns that being premium is to expansive if you're gonna use it to spam .

Get banned once... you learn a lesson. Get banned again, should be a permaban imo, especially if for the same reason.

Excelent news, all the spam was giving an otherwise very good site, a bad image. I'm a longstanding premium member and i have only praise for such a long overdue rule.

All members can still see each others comments, and recieve thanks for serious advice. Spammers and link stuffing will no longer be rewarded.

    Well done Shawn.

Someone just needs to offer a good reason to be "dofollow". So far there hasn't really been any (at least not one that is better than the reasons to be nofollow).

I didn't read all eight pages of the thread, so this may have come up already, but I was under the impression that Google doesn't care if a link is nofollow or dofollow?

So now we need a good reason to be dofollow lol. This is getting funnier by the minute. How about... I don't think links should have a condom. If you were a link, would you like it?

Yes... since nofollow helps with a few issues to make the site better (helps combat spam and useless posts for example).

I'm not opposed to changing how things work (obviously), but I'm not going to change something just for sake of changing it and certainly not going to change something for the worse. If dofollow links somehow make the site a better place, we will go that route. But so far, I haven't seen how they make the site better.

Have you noticed a difference? I haven't. Just as many crap posts today as there were before the switch.

It wasn't something done to address the short-term. It would be foolish to think that throwing a switch is going to instantly make spammers stop trying to spam. It's a change geared more towards the long-term. Word will get out as people tell other people about the change and eventually more and more people will know about the change.

It certainly is not going to stop all spam no matter how long we wait, but the plan is that it will cut it down at least a bit in the long-term.

Well if it downs spam 5% and makes 300k users unhappy than its not worth it. Numbers matters when making decisions i think.

The only people who are going to be unhappy about this are those who are posting to get backlinks to their sites and are the sort of people that generally most forums do not want. Those who post as they want to be a part of the community and contribute to the good of the community aren't going to care.

I was thinking something similar about being the one good reason.

Well, I'm sure it would make 300k users happy if I gave them admin access too (or giving everyone up to 100 dofollow signature links). But doing something to make a user happy isn't necessarily the same thing as it being good for the forum as a whole.

    lol that is hilarious.
But... it's not giving us something new, it's something you took away. Not like we had admin access or 100 sigs and you took them away, we never had that. We had dofollow sigs and you took them away. You already cut us down to two (unless premium...).
