Softlayer Review

A few months ago i moved to Soflayer ,buying a good dedicated server, because i thought they are the best in the business. Well,it was a bad decision . Their prices are high ,and their quality is low . They will make a lot of updates to their network (for some reason they keep doing them every month) making my sites unavailable for hours ! (and they will just respond that this is NORMAL )

More then that, their support is worst ever ( in fact, there is NO support,if you contact them, even via a paid ticket ) you will regret - they will just loose your time ,and they will brake any good settings you had . Even if you ask them about their services they will give responses that will just (at most) make you laugh . I know it is not a managed hosting, but they should be able to provide information about their services (for example, their automated restart is not working, but they don't have a clue, they will just say 'this is unmanaged hosting') .that's all .
paid support ? that's a joke also when it comes to Softlayer. Their support don't have the knowledge to respond to any question, you will just loose your time. Also, their servers are not good - you will have many problems with that .
The conclusion, after half a year spent with them -it's NOT worth it !

We had some servers with softlayer at on point (actually we had purchased them with the planet), which was eventually bought out by softlayer. Everything was great with the planet, however as soon as SL purchased the planet, things started going downhill in a hurry. The one thing I do have to disagree with you on though is their support, I felt they had an excellent support team (at least 6 months ago they did), but considering everything else was going down hill at the time, it wouldn't surprise me if their support has also dropped down a few notches. Anyway, sorry to hear about your troubles.

Same for us. We had a few servers at ThePlanet, and moved them away in pretty short order. Amongst our biggest complaints are their RIDICULOUS prices for upgrading servers.

I have to agree, that was pretty much the deal breaker for us. Its one thing to over pay for a great service, but when you have to over pay for a sub-par service... thats almost unheard of.

yes, their support is also going down the hill..
other thing i have to note here is that they NEVER stop scheduled maintenance . a few times a week they have to replace routers and other things,so i often have downtime caused by their never ending maintenance .That's also really bad .A few days ago there was a downtime of an hour, now it will happen again.i don't understand how is it possible that the biggest webhosting company to have such issues . are they too big now that they don't care about their clients?

well that might happens as you don't know how to manage server.

If its un-managed then you should be able to sort things on your own, I always read good reviews about them !

any backup of what you're saying here?

Softlayer - Had small 2-3 DC all over USA. Other then they use L3, xNetwork and some of thePanet Data Centers. If you getting low support that means you definitely on out cast DC of Softlayer (L3, xnetworks else). So, I suggest if you have enough money to buy server form Softlayer - then buy from thePlanet. At list you will getting reasonable supports.
Try else - Like SingleHop :)

ThePlanet hasn't been around for more then a year now. Softlayer did buy them.

Anyway, I would suggest Leaseweb. They have a great network in the Netherlands, and they just expanded to the US and Germany. Their prices are very reasonable for the quality they offer.
