    1. use Google's cache to get your articles back
    2. contact your hosting company and explain them what happened with ur sites, maybe they can do something for your other files

No it displays only the pages that were found and cached by their spiders as html
to check it type this on google
    site:yourdomain.com
    Code (markup):
    (without http://www)
On the search results you'll see your site's pages and click on cache bellow each link

    Hope it helps

Get a new host. You shouldve made a backup when your host announced maintenance.

FYI - You are responsible for your own back ups, unless your host says otherwise.

Yes I would find a new host first off. Then get everything you currently have up and running. Make sure the new host provides a backup system. Then it never hurts to keep a backup of your more important files yourself, away from the host. If datacenter burns to the ground, you can put things back together easier. Although losing files due to a scheduled maint window does not sound right at all. Move...

Really hope you learned your lesson about backups. I can't stress enough the need for clients to make their own backups regularly.

Your current web host did not offer back-ups? If you do not mind me asking, who were you hosted with?

Normally a hosting company should have backup services for every servers they host, maybe the backup files are not the most updated one. The hosting company did not officially annouce it to prevent you rely them on the backups. If the hosting company really did not have any backup servers, you are advise to look for other hosting company.

In fact, for every hosting owner, you are adviced to perform the backup frequently/on daily basis if your site is very active. Keep yourselves a copy of offline backup files better than you have nothing on hand.

What everyone seems to be missing is that a host's backups should never be an excuse for not making your own. Always, always, always make your own backups, regardless if the host makes them or not.

Kick myself for not making my own backups.

    Then find out what happened.

If the files disappeared after "maintenance", then this hints the hosts DO have a backup system in place and that they restored the latest backup they had. If a host does a backup once per day, then any files that change between backup intervals will not be available during a restore. If these were older files then that blows that theory out of the water.

I'd then kick myself again for choosing a host that doesn't do backups (you need to check they do, not just take their word for it), and again (really hard this time) for not having my own backup of the "two most important files from my website".

Unscheduled maintenance? If the website you included earlier (I guess it was deleted) is indeed the company's website, the domain is for sale. I guess going out of business can be considered unscheduled maintainence? :D

That's it and most likely purchase a jump drive also an external hard drive where you can store your data for the future.
