You married a Dutchie Will? Picked up anything on the Dutch language? Can you pronounce Scheveningen? That's always a hoot hearing that from native English speakers The Netherlands has it all - Winter - Spring - Summer - Fall...so yes, you have days it's not as pleasant. It's not that hot all the time (can be in the summer though) and it's not all that cold all the time (can be cold in winter though). If you're looking for a all year round ± 20 degrees Celsius environment then The Netherlands would not be the ideal place to live in.
I know decent chinese restaurants here where you can get 4 different dishes served over rice for $4.00 with a soup!
Great finds - these are the best. Best slices, best dogs, best tom yum gai, etc....I really have to get to your neck of the woods. I used to live within spitting distance, just never in the city proper. I miss back East.
Nah, she's Arabic. We were both just passing through. Dutch is hard to speak! Dutch is pretty easy for an American to understand, but I could barely speak at all. I think that Duth people have extra throat muscles. And when I did try to speak, my Dutch friends told me that I spoke Dutch with a German accent. Weird...
My best bud growing up was Dutch - father used to put on the pointed wooden shoes whenever working outside, the whole bit. I always thought the two (Dutch & German) sounded very close. Makes sense, given the common root of Old Frankish.
"There's only two things I hate in this world. People who are intolerant of other people's cultures and the Dutch. Goldmember: What? Take the fahza away! ..."
LOL Yeah, the reason you could understand it quickly is because a lot of words actually sounds like English and the way we create sentences is about the same. Bed in English is the same as in Dutch Water in English is the same as in Dutch Just a slightly different way of pronouncing but nearly the same and more words like these i just can´t think of right now are existent in the Dutch language. If one can speak or understand English fairly well the Dutch language is quite easy to learn. As long as you can swear your way around you will do just fine overhere
I just talk English loudly and slowly and point a lot. It's gotten me through more than a dozen countries.
No one talked about Switzerland which is outstanding. Check here for a good survey about the best places worldwide: http://www.citymayors.com/features/quality_survey.html
Will.Spencer, if you are a US citizen, no matter which country you live in, you still have to pay US taxes. (Unless the US has a double tax treaty with that country, and the only countries the US has tax treaties with are countries with similar or higher taxes.) Land of the free.
I'd agree. However, if you are from Lyon....I'd say you're in a pretty swell spot yourself. Le Bouchon Lyonnais - hmmmmmmmm.
Until you have to pay taxes. I like how they never figure personal or economic freedom in these "best places to live" lists.
Not if you are an expatriot. Why do you think most of the liberals in Hollywood spend so much time living outside the country? Some of them even have warrants for their arrest
You have to completely forfeit your US citizenship in order to not pay US taxes, very very few people (and none in Hollywood) have done it, and recently the government has made it even harder to do. Those movie stars living abroad are still paying US taxes. Trust me, even if you live outside the US 100% of the year for decades, you still have to pay US taxes. The US is only one of two counties in the world (the other is terrorist haven Syria) that taxes based on citizenship rather than residence.
He defrauded the government of millions, why wouldn't he? And don't give me the "he's rich, he has good lawyers" none-sense. Martha Stewart has 10 times more money than Snipes will ever have and she went to jail for much less.
