I just want to know when trying to pick a keyword phrase, as I am new to this, what competition level I should pick from...being 1000 monthly searches, or a couple thousand, or tens of thousands of monthly searches? Thank you for your time.
and depends on how much traffic you are trying to get The more searches it gets, the more traffic you will get if you rank it right
Ok, I see what youre saying. Question though, is there like a happy medium if im just starting out? Between max searches and low competition? I have a hard time determining the competition of the keyword phrases. I am just using google's keyword tool to research. Again, Thank you.
Yea if you are just starting out it's best to start off with a micro niche keyword somewhere between 1500-4000 exact searches are good to start off with
ok, so i did an exact search for my niche, which is in the fitness/health niche and there is still a global search option, is that the one that i want to be in the 1500-4000 range? Also, say that my site takes off after some time, is it possible to target more competitive keywords, or do you just always stick to the same? would i have to make a new site for the new, more competitive keywords?
Depends on your SEO skills and how deep your pockets are , if there both good and deep go for allot of global searches,if not go for medium searches with little competition and obviously depending on what it is your doing, use buying keywords and if for adsense, use review type keywords for best effect.
Well, I have been reading about SEO for about 5 months now, so I feel like I know alot, however have never implemented them. I do not plan on spending money on SEO. I plan to get natural backlinks and what not. Also, I do not plan to use adsense, i am promoting an a product from clickbank to cash in. One that i have purchased and like a lot.
Another question is when i go from a broad search to an exact search, it drops from about 60,000 searches to about 6,000. So am i looking at the 6,000 searches, which would make that a good keyword phrase for me or am I looking at the 60,000 which would make it a lot harder?
Yea the exact searches are the ones you need to be looking for as broad searches aren't the real searches for that exact keyword so with 6k you are good to start off, and on the difficulty, it would depend on the top 10 google results and how their backlinks are looking
Awesome, thank you very much! I know i should focus on just a couple keyword phrases, but like i asked a second ago, is it normal to after a long time once the site starts getting more traffic and what not to incorporate more competitive keywords or not really? Would that require just another website?
The information provided from Google's keyword tool is not enough to choose the right words. Competition research on the results themseleves is neccessary to pick out the right keywords at the most effective time in the campaign. There are methods of roughly estimating the amount of traffic that you would get from a keyword if you were ranked 1st, 2nd, 3rd, or what not in search results for that phrase. Choosing keywords is all about choosing the right ones to compete for. The question becomes; could you get ranked in the top three results for that keyword? And; how much time & effort would it take to get your site ranked for that keyword? For new websites, most of the time its a good idea to go after long-tail keywords with the lowest amount of competition & the highest amount of searches. However, it has to be within the criteria of low competition which takes some research. I will tell you of the process that I use for choosing keywords for short & long term campaigns because the two are different. What are you trying to accomplish? I'm assuming that you are trying to get a new website on an SEO campaign. I will explain my proccess from this assumption. On page SEO should use your most relevent keywords of all competition levels within the code of the site from the start. Once a website gets enough rank from the long-tail keywords with less competition, it is a good idea to start link building with medium competition keywords as well. It takes a while to get there. It takes even longer to be ready to backlink for high comp keywords. Go through Google's keyword tool & sort by competition - lowest first. Make a short list of the ones that meet a certain number criteria. This number should vary depending on your niche & what you are trying to accomplish. 1,000 is a good number for me to explain with. Once you have a list of say 10 of the lowest competition keywords with at least 1,000 local searches you are going to want to go to Google, search & anyalyze the results for those phrases. You want to choose words that have the highest amount of searches with the least amount of competition in the top 3 results. You'll have to use an SEO tool to see the compeitition of the searches. I recommend SEO Book's extension for Firefox http://tools.seobook.com/firefox/seo-for-firefox.html. It'll help with the keyword choosing proccess by showing the strength of ranked sites that you'd be competing with. This will help you determine the amount of time it would take to rank for that keyword. Go to Google with the tool turned on. Put in a keyword & press enter. The results in Google will show up the same, but underneath will be competition information from the SEO Book service. I use conservative numbers. Assume that you can make 20 relevent links per day. It has been shown that 40% of the time users will click on the first search result. 15% of searches will go to the second search result. 8% of searches will go to the third search result. The rest is distributed throughout the page. For example, if the first search result has a page rank of 2 & 1,400 backlinks supporting then you could beat it at that rate in 3 months. This would be considered low competition. That means that, if it is a keyword with 1,000 local searches per month, you could get 400 visitors a month from ranking for that. With a conversion rate of 1%, you could make $400/month with a $100 product from that one keyword. Best wishes, Crys Celine
It depends if you are building a site based on it's keyword If it's that then yea you can rank other keywords related to that one keyword You can also build a huge site and build lots of keywords around it for example shoes then get keywords for black shoes blue shoes white shoes etc
That was very helpful! thank you very much!! Ya I plan to promote an affiliate product that costs about 65 dollars through clickbank. I will definitely take your advice!! what did you mean when you said "On page SEO should use your most relevent keywords of all competition levels within the code of the site from the start."
It means that you should keywords in your page's content as well. Specially the main keywords about your business.
