This was a great move. co.cc sites almost never have any quality content. A mere $10 isn't that big of an investment, search engines should show sites who's webmasters take them seriously.

Really? Maybe you have not searched properly. I am giving you a small list of good sites of co.cc
Go to Yahoo and search for "students site:co.cc"
I would have given you the direct link but right now this site is not allowing me to do so

True. Some sites are giving excellent content to the community. You can't categorize all the .co.cc domains as spammers.

Go check this site this is my site http://www.techblaster.co.cc/ Nothing has copied from other blogs. Everything is original. Google page rank is two(2) before banning co.cc domains. I think you can still check page rank by IE.

Pretty soon Google is gonna deindex .info domains because of all the cheap spammy sites out there. I say good riddance cuz they crowd out the good sites.

Typical for a americans and corporations in general. Ban free things so other can make a buck by selling it.
They have the myth that what is free it's low quality. When you ask for a free host, they tell you to buy one because it's better.
Now, they want to ban all sub domains because they are free ? There are lots of them: cz.cc, co.tv, eu.pn. Spammers will move to another free sub domain.
Then what will google do next ? Ban another range of sub domain, because some people used them for spam ?
They chosen the easiest and fastest way, just ban the whole range of co.cc, instead of looking on those bad sites, with spam and malware activity.
Like every corporation, google doesn't care for small businesses, just for big fish, because they pay better.
    Lazy and greedy Google.

Regardless of your views on U.S. americans or corporations, what do you honestly think of the general quality of co.cc? It's rubbish. It's for spammers - mostly indian.

Why don't you start your own search engine or link directory with free links like Google offered. I imagine your system would get abused but you aren't lazy nor greedy so you would put up with it, wouldn't you? Let me know the address when it's up so I can advertise some sites of mine that are of such a low quality and spammy nature that no-one else is willing to support them. ;)

What're you saying about Google not caring about small business? By "small businesses" do you mean businesses that cannot or will not pay for a domain? Those small businesses have many options for free hosting and sub-domains but .co.cc is overwhelmingly for indian spammers and anyone with a proper business on there is a lunatic or fool.

I doubt if this is permanent, there doesn't seem to be an official stance on this, might be updating it's algorithm

i think distinguish between spam site and other sites was better than penalising all
also there were a lot of good content sites

I agree most .co.cc are spam sites. Are there other free hosting/domain providers being blocked as well? How about free forum hosting? Any ideas?
