Because most of visitors are not interested to find such sites by searching and the search engines know about this reality. People are more interested to find and read ad-free useful info. They don't want to be forced to click on ads or checkout something. Majority of the internet users, tv audiences, newspaper readers don't like to see/watch/listen to/click on ads. This is one of the biggest problems of media and advertisement industry. Search engines and other websites are also in this media/advertisement industry. They know the reaction to ads and they select ranked sites accordingly. That's why some of the most popular sites have no advertisement. But I have no idea how such ad-free sites pay the expenses. In short, you can only get what you have paid for. Free backlinks can never bring something valuable.
What about the links and anchor text in the signature at the bottom of your post. Are you saying that those hold no SEO value?
Yes, the signature links have no SEO value. As for my own sign links, only one of them is a site. But I don't own that site. A member of DP contacted me via PM and offered me a price to buy that space. I accepted his offer and sold him that space. I even didn't try to sell that signature link. The other link is to send me PM. It's an internal link of DP forums
