How to make people click on ads?

    Hi,
I have had an Adsense account from past three years. Earlier I was not so dedicated about monetizing the site. From past one month I have got serious. I have programming related blogs and one general blog. I have put ads on them, but am still not clear how to make people click on ads on my blog. As mostly the content is programming related content, my targeted audience would check the source code or general tip about programming and then move on!!
How can I make them click on the ads?
Any one here at DP has been successful at monetizing a similar site?

Ask yourself when you will click on the ads, it sames happen on other visitor
You might consider to break down your programming code into small path, and put Adsense ads below the code, so that visitor can see the ads. They will click on it if the ads interested them

Moral of the story : Programmers do not click on ads. Simply sticking out ads on my programming blog is not going to fetch me money :).
Need to figure out other possible avenues that interest me as well as generate revenue.

I personally click on those ads which are really interesting in looking. So just try to make your ad interesting by blending it properly and keep relevant content as the ad also looks like a part of your content.

Hey I'm not sure if you use wordpress or not, but a very quick and easy way to increase your click-through rate for wordpress sites is to use an "adsense-ready" theme. I personally advise my clients to use the CTR Theme, as I find that it is a nice blend of visual appeal and ad placement. The really nice thing about themes like this is that many of them include a feature that allows you to rotate your ads automatically.

This decreases "ad blindness," which is a term that refers to when visitors simply do not pay attention to the ad because they are accustomed to seeing it in one place or form. Many times, a low-ctr can be blamed on visitors mentally screening out the ads. Anyone with a little background in psychology will tell you that dynamic pages will force a visitor to pay much more attention to what's going on in the page. Just like if you are driving, you would pay much more attention if you were on a curvy and twisting road.

If you are not using a WP-site, this idea still applies. Since you are a programmer, you shouldn't have too much trouble setting up a pseudo-random generator with certain switches or booleans that will change between different CSS stylesheets.

    Hope that helps!

Ad placement, colors/blending, # of units, keep tweaking until it improves. Some sites will always suck though.

Isn't it hard to convince a programmer to click on your ad? Probably it is but may be you can blend your ads, place ads on the targeted areas and get them interested in ads then you can get clicks. Nothing is impossible brother.

It depends on your ads placement...i mostly get clicks on the ads that are placed within my content rather than on sidebars. Secondly try to match the color of your website/blog with ads color and BG..good luck

Yes all my blogs are WP, and the ad placement is also within the content and then in a sidebar. But the main challenge is the audience. Consider the scenario where in you are trying to find a solution for a crash in a program. Now such a visitor on my page would ideally check out the solution, apply the solution to his problem, if it works he will leave the site. If the solution does not work for him then he may try to find the if there are other links on my page which may solve his problem. So in such a situation, what ever may be the ad placement or the content, would the visitor really bother himself with the ad?
You can check this on one of the very specific type of pages am talking about : http://symbiangeek.flaminghorns.com/2009/04/solving-kern-exec-3-a-few-more-tips

Your optimism is encouraging, I will give it another try. Thanks.

    Yes, did that already. Thanks.

The most important is to drive traffic to your site. The more traffic, the more clicks.

Yea most visitors don't click on any ads unless its really out there and has some interest. As others said, place yourself in their shoes. What helps though is placing the Ads on the correct positions, don't put them @ the bottom/don't hide them. Use the large Rectangle Ad format as well/Makes it look like its a link and they are familiar pressing those. Use colors to blend them them in nicely with your site/makes it feel like its actually a part of your site/more clicks. And yes just more traffic, traffic..And maybe the site doesn't have enough interesting content for them to actually STAY around/look around @ your site. Make sure the navigation is clear and easy for them to continue hopping from page to page and they might eventually find something.

Definetely look to keywords that people will be interested in, as mentioned before programmers / techie guys most likely will not click on ads because they know they are ads.
You'll need to intergrate your ads smartly, so they blend in with your website, and possibly look like your navigation bar on your site in which people will click to get more info.
You can also try some advertisement boosting service that I do as well (along with my regular SEO) such as ayuads.com or innoshow.com
I use both the service and my own CEO and blending techniques and have no problem making around 2K a month with little maintanance.

Adsense is widely regarded as 'chump change'. Except by Google, of course.

Try changing your Ads title and URL to a gray tone to match your site theme color.

Webmasters and regular net sufers are ad blind. I think the niche should target people that are not using computers all day

Provide minimal and boring content thereby,
making the ads look very enticing and an escape from the boring page they have landed on.

For adsense everybody tends to think in reverse and make the most incredible stupendous site ever,,
when it's the plain and boring sites that cause people to click away and escape to something more interesting.
