No that is not the matter. why it is important means it will check your link in most branded site. Wikipedia is most branded site for that reason it will consider. One more thing there is no nofollow and dofollow. In the place of Google all are equal

Are you suggesting that Google treats dofollow and nofollow the same? lol Than why would they come up with the nofollow tag...?

You shouldn't go for PR if you want your link in wikipedia.
Most of the time, the links are nofollow. This only means that it doesn't give PR through.
This probally will increase your SERPs (also in google!)

There are so many variation in all the above answers & opinions. I suggest everyone must back their opinion with some authentic sources or references. This will make your assertion more authentic.

Why? OP can just go to Wikipedia and find out himself that it is nofollow.
OP just needs to realize that PageRank is nothing. The sooner he does the sooner he can start focusing on what IS important and he will start to make more money. Until he does, he won't do very well.
Are you serious...? WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wikipedia is nofollow......................

The truth is, google never wants you to know what they are doing. It would help spammers manipulate the system. The trust is, just make sure everything stays natural and produce great content!

There certainly is a nofollow, read (www.google.com/webmasters/docs/search-engine-optimization-starter-guide.pdf) Google's SEO guide for starters it clrearly states that if you don't want to pass your link reputation to others or simply do not want a particular link to be crawled you should use nofollow.

Well all I can think of is that Wikipedia is considered of very high importance due to the high traffic it generates and also because it only lists sites of high quality so even-though it may be a nofollow but google does consider huge weight for links from wiki.

Not true. Most of them maybe ,but it is human edited and there are a lot of links people add for their own sites and they are not quality. Yes, if somebody adds a link and it sucks it can be removed but there are many links on there that people haven't edited out yet. But the majority of the links are quality just not all of them.

Yes I do agree that that not all the links are quality, but spammy and low-quality links are removed very quickly on wikipedia before you can notice them. Or google can notice them i their index. And also wikipedia has a too high reputation to be affected by a bunch of these links.

Everybody knows that nofollow links are with lower (much lower ever) weight than the dofollow ones.
But wikipedia is quite large and editor open encyclopedia, so you can threat each article as different website. If the article is good and filled with information (not spammy article), definitely google will threat your link as addition to the PR and backlinks of your website
And of course do not forget that wikipedia is having large amount of authority and unique visitors daily. So you will get big benefits in having link there. But in all cases the article you are writing should high quality and according to their standards.
