I agree with link building. Putting out original articles has worked well for me. Additionally, I create a facebook fan page that is named the same as my site. Promoting the fan page is sometimes easier than promoting the website itself.

Plus your site url should have key words in it.
If you are good at writing then create blogs and articles(make sure these has some internal link to your site) and start submitting.
