Sudden drop in impressions by 80% from one day to another

    Hi everyone

I've noticed that since yesterday all my Adsense sites have a sudden drop in impressions by around 80%. Not just one site but all of them!

    Any idea why this happened?

Did this happen to anyone else before as well?

Did I get down-rated for whatever reason? Or was there some general google indexing update? I'm getting about 90% of my traffic from Google.

I checked my PR, its still the same. I also checked for errors or malware on the site. I couldn't find anything.

I'm pretty worried by this drastic change as it isn't really comprehensible to me.

Thank you for any help or information.

That's the first thing that should have been done.

    @ 2ndsky

What are you using to track traffic? Google Analytics, Awstats or something else?

If these tracking tools do not indicate a fall in traffic, then check your Adsense codes. Someone may have hacked your sites and replaced your Adsense code.

Yes I did and the drop corresponds with the adsense stats. Both in analytics and awstats. Its a bit hard to get more data as this drop happened a day ago.

Edit: upon closer inspection the numbers dont correspond. Not sure if this is normal tough. For example yesterday: Analytics says 168 visitors (243 pageviews), AWstats says 411 visits ( 809 pages / 2046 hits) and Adsense 87 impressions....

Another thing: I got banned from Adwords (same account as Adsense) because I had an add running going to one of my adsense sites. This add however was 4 years old and I wasn't even aware that it still was running. Could there be some connection? The date would fit to the drop as I was banned a day ago.

Frankly I'm a bit pissed of at Google as they first sent me a warning about the Adword ad not complying with their TOS. About 4 hours after that e-mail I got another mail stating I got banned forever from Adwords. There wasn't even time for me to react or correct my mistake. :(

Analytics is the accurate one - Awstats also count returning visitors, It's not hard to find the reason if you now how to use analytics

Check which source of traffic drop, if se traffic drop, it is due to lose ranking.

Aye thanks. As I figured since 80-90% of my traffic comes from Google this is also shown in Analytics:

    08. June : google (organic) - Visits: 797 - Visits in %: 83.72%
    09. June : google (organic) - Visits: 105 - Visits in %: 62.50%

Now I'm trying to find out why? and how this happened?
Or in other words: how can your ranking drop this much from one day to the other? :(

Did this happen to anyone else here before?

Edit: for reference: the traffic fluctuated around the 1k visits mark since 2011.

Do you know perhaps what rank your kw for that page had on SERP and what it is after this drop? (e.g. it could have been on #5 few days ago and now on #154).

Did you change hosting lately or anything else about your page?
Did you do any weird backlinking? What was the last activity you did before this happened?

Since its a huge site, the traffic gets pretty dispersed on a lot of keywords which makes it hard for me to track.

I neither changed hosting nor did I any other changes to the site.

The last thing I did was some paid link building by another member on DP (aka directory submission to a lot of directories) along with optimizing the site by adding two more google adsense slots. But that was back in February 2011 so I'm not really sure if this is relevant.

    Any other ideas?

Ok, according to your data, it can be either due to the keyword serp drop or search volume of the keyword drop. I believed it is a major keyword. Now you shall find out which keyword have huge drop in search volume or which keyword huge drop on serp. If serp drop, find out the reason (google dance, sand box or competitor etc). If search volume drop ( this normally happen only for those seasonal keyword like coupon april 2011, mother's day gift etc), you can only add content and/or wait for the season

    Thanks everyone.

I've looked into it some more and I'm pretty sure this drop is due to the Google Panda update.

Now the next question is how to recover from this and get my ranking up again.

    Any panda survivors here?

Looking into the above conversations , people have covered every possible troubleshooting method so the most logical explanation remains that you were affected by the panda update which was rolled in on April for the rest of the world (non-US based) . It can also be a result of google dance. Your SERPs differ on different google data centers and if they are in the process of computing pagerank(which takes 3-4 months) then it results in unusual spikes and dips in traffic called as google dance.....

As far as panda survivor is concerned I would say my sites not only survived but surged past the panda update . Basically the sites gained the traffic lost by panda affected sites. Infact my main blog got not only a spike but that traffic remains consistent till date and increasing an as a result the blog also got all 8 site links within 2 weeks of the panda update ...
