Chose one, then find a partner that does the other. My business partner is a great programmer. I handle all of the ideas, marketing, and seo. Works out well for us.

Be good in both of them. I know that specialising in one area makes really good in that particular area but it can get you in a dead end! I think you should be a flexible person that can adjust yourself to both areas! ;)

A little bite of both ... if he will do web programming... i mean , a web programmer must to known some web design , html , ajax, seo ,etc... when creating a big online database,no?

But a normal programmer... working on C++ and writing PC games... don't really must to known all this things ;)

A software programmer has to be really good at it to get anywhere with it.

A SEO guy can ramble on about whatever and still slip by :p

Whichever you're more passionate about. If you choose a career that you love, it will work out better for you in the long run
