I'm new in the world of SEO.For these questions I'm only talking about free strategies. So far through trial and error my strategies for link building rely on article submission, forum post's, blog commenting, directories, keyword research, and competitor research. I use to write people letter's for a link on the recipients page, but the success rate just wasn't worth it so I moved letter writing to a minimum priority of mine. Was that a good move? What's the best way to use these unique articles which I don't post on my site to my advantage? How about forum activity? I currently am using the link signature strategy. Gaining trust in the community and being an active member for the signature. Is there any thing else I can do with forum posting and activity? How about blog commenting? How exactly should I go about blog activity? I currently submit my site to about 20 directories a week. Is that good? I use google anylytics for keyword research and alexa.com for competitor research. What's your opinion on that? Are there any key factors I'm missing in my strategy that would be worth my time? What about social bookmarking? What exactly am I suppose to do with that and how? I only try to obtain links from the most relevant and high ranking sites. Please, share your strategies. -Thank You.
Hey Jake, You are doing alot of the correct strategies needed to get established online. There are many different strategies to link building and dependent upon whether you play the "white" hat or "black" hat role your efforts will reveal different results. Contacting various site owners and asking for them to put your link on their site is something I have had success with, its just a matter of how you approach it and not being affraid to hear "NO". This is one technique I had success with in my early years online. Now I have many successful traffic techniques that don't include link building but its a great start! Good Luck. Travis
You got much of it right. I prefer to do article marketing and forum posting a lot. Also, you could look into Social Bookmarking as well as these are very good to get some good link juice. Further, I wouldn't rely too much on directories as I hear the Panda update has ruled these out. Analytics is a good way to monitor traffic but don't get too dependent on Alexa, it isn't very accurate and only generates a ranking based on traffic figures regardless of the source. Also - post new content on your website regularly.

I think quality backlinks are important than submitting your link in all formats of links building. text links are better way to lead this in this way like comments, guest blogging, article submission.

@ Jake I see no problem with your current plan and set-up. All are good for a start and I hope it works well on your site. Just want to add - in terms of link building, try to accumulate more relevant links for it may give you an edge over competitors
I try to get only the most relevant links for my site. Some people say it's not worth it and to just find sites with a high pr but I think that like you said even though it won't be worth a whole lot more it will still give you that edge. As long as the sites are at a higher level than you I'm sure it will add weight, but don't get me wrong I only try to obtain links from the highest ranking sites possible.
