Fact is, there are reports that the Taliban profits from the opium trade, but there are only a few detailed evidence available to the public. With how the insurgents interact with drug traders and profit from opium no one knows.
Don't know about that. When somebody holds a gun to your child's head and asks for money, you tend to pay. You may have paid, but it's still stealing. Of course its never phrased as direct extortion. It goes more along the line of, "How can we deal with the opium problem in our nation when we are so poor? Send us money so we can police the farmers and stop the trade". A more accurate interpretation is, if you don't send us money, we will flood your streets with cheap opium. If you do send us money, we will use it to conduct subversive activities to destabilize our neighbor's fully functioning democracy, and you will still get your streets flooded with opium.

Our number one concern is probably that they keep production up (which is now at a 20 year high) to keep the market cost per barrel of oil down. If you are asking if Iraq is free to boycott US oil purchases, the answer is yes. They are as free to boycott our purchases as Venezuela, whose leader can't stand us yet currently sells us 950,000 barrels per day. They are as free to boycott the US as you are to turn away 60% of your paying clients. You seem to have freedom confused with stupidity. Seriously, sell oil to Russia who doesn't need it?
