personally ive tried a lot of them before i settled and i found opencart to be really good and they keep it updated and just released 1.5.0

Go for Prestashop.. It's very good eCommerce software with lot of features. Magento is another good option but it's too complex to use and also for designer/developers.
Magento is great, but it's a high resource demand software. If you know a little bit of Zend Framework try zen-cart to develop your own store.
Yeah Magento is chunky, prestashop seems to be leading the way at the moment, plus they just released a new version. The only downside is no built in affiliate system ( if that applies )
