What's wrong with IPB?

A lot of people here dislike IPB, and would very much prefer vBulletin. May I ask why? I mean, I've used IPB for quite a while now and I like it.

As a forum user (i have no experience on the admin side with IPB):
    • can't easily tell which threads I've posted in when browsing or searching (ie. thread icons don't indicated which threads I've posted in)
    • i'm used to vBulletin's thread subscriptions to keep me updated on threads I'm interested in that get new posts. IPB doesn't seem to have this same feature.

    Just to comment on that:

IPB does indeed have forum markers that show which topic you have posted in, and members can also subscribe to a certain topic, also. =\ Maybe it's just not that noticable or something.

    Anyone else have any thoughts?

Well, I haven't figured out how it works then. The two IBP forums that I visit, I can't tell how to list the threads I've posted in (that have new replies) or determine which threads I've posted in when viewing the new posts since last visit.

Vb has it's own value.Vb admincp is much better then ipb plus vb loads faster then IPB...Vb plugin system is pretty cool plus the modifications community is big and active!. :)

I think vb is much better due to their customer service.

Both forums have powerful features and one lacks of functions that the other has, and vice versa.

People tend to use vBulletin because they believe that gives them a "more professional" look, since Invision has a background of free versions.

Personally, I'm running both vbulletin and Invison and this last one is my favorite on a hand-in-hand basis.

However, for practical purposes, I prefer XenoBB which is a summary of them, without the oveloaded number of features, hacks and headaches.

    LOL, that's a good point.

There are so many good forum scripts, mods hacks, addons, plugins, etc., that worth a try, not just the classic forums all of us know.

There is a Polish forum which does most of the things that Invision does, use flat text database and is free, and the list of scripts would be endless

I've heard that vB has a more active community, and an IPB community dies faster. Do you think this is true?

    Don't think so.

I was admin at an Invision community that was very active. After a server crash it was disbanded keeping the original IPB for the old and vbulletin for the new one.

    Today both half dead :/

I think he means vbulletin and invision official community site...Vbulletin.org is active ...Invision has actually less mods the vb plus you can say no support for mods where as at vbulletin.org mods developers give support of mods(FREE!)

I've only used IPBs admin - which I quite like. I'm happy using either as a user - can;t say I've noticed any advantages of one over the other.

No, I meant generally, for all IPB or vB sites, but yeah, that is true.

The thing that's stopping me from buying vB is its price. $180..=\

I think it can also come down to the fact that vB has been around for how long? IPB not that long....

we trust what we know, we are human correct?

IPB is slow... it also isn't attractive enough.

Also... another thing about IPB is that it is much more vulnerable to exploits than VB

the thing i like the most about vBulletin is their support, IPB customer support sucks a lot... the average response time i got was 4-6hr were as vBulletin only take more then 5-20min.

2nd reason of disliking IPB is the php Edits to the IPB core files, most of the vBulletin Mods does not need any PHP edits, and very easy to install/import...
