Unique content, write some articles, Do forum comments thats all i'm doing and so far it works good. Try blog comments, mabey do a facebook fan page. Main thing stick with it just takes time never ending process seo is especially with a forum.

A good way to get traffic is social networks such as twitter and facebook. This way you can target people who will be interested in your forum and its topics. You can create a fan page and get people to like it. Keep it up to date regularly with interesting posts which people will want to share. Anyone who is a fan will have your latest post on their wall, which will be seen by their friends which you may find have similar interests and so on. The same with twitter. Tweet regular interesting snippets. Avoid over tweeting urls. Keep on topic and follow people who are interested in the subject matter. You will be amazed how it will grow and more importantly you will have a targetted audience.
