has anyone every gotten into dmoz, I think acceptance is a myth

    hi,

I have registerd many sites for dmoz and not gotten even one up. I realise that it can take several months, but I am talking years. I guess there is not acceptance notification sent, but even though I provide my sites with no marketing kind of blurb that might get them banned. and they are real sites, not affiliate portals, it doesnt seem to matter.

Can anyone who has gotten a site accepted enlighten me?

My main offline business got accepted. I think the key is to not have affiliate links or adsense on your site, i.e be a 'proper' business.

Same here... I tried several sites in the last few years, I'm certain i complied with their T&C, but not one site got accepted. I'm talking about quality sites, without any advertising at all...

    And exactly same here.

as per the sig below one is the leading Gluten Free directory in Australia. It only has clients that we have personally contacted listed in the banners, and there are many free listings in it too. Not an affiliate in site. Its a genuine help to celiac and gluten intolerant people etc, and all links are made manually, yet we have never been accepted by DMOZ.

I mean I have written the description to be as neutral as possible (so its not an add and its accepted), but still nothing.

Makes me kind of wish it wasn't mentioned as an important ranking factor for google.

Hmmm.... if ya read their T&C then you'd know that advertising is not something they look for (unless it's an affiliate site).

DMOZ is a Human Edited Directory... There are very few volunteers working, without penny as directory editors, in comparison to number of websites submitted for approval.
This is why website listing gets delayed.

Also I sometimes wonder if DMOZ is URL specific and not helping your sub pages. What if you had a site that went deep and loaded with adsense? Doubt they'd list it, but it may not matter.

I've had a few few sites get listed, the main thing is fill out the proper submission and than forget about it.

Once you read T&C and then looking to the sites listed, there is in many cases some misleadings.
For example, i have one site which doesn't comply with their terms, but some other website with absolute the same nature of business is accepted.
Off course, there is no adverts, adsense etc on either my site or the one listed

If it complies with guidelines, then it will be in the suggestions pool waiting for a review and that might take from a few days to a few YEARS. DMOZ is not a listing service for site owners, we do not undertake to review your site in a given time period. It waits for an editor to volunteer to spend their spare time working that section and choose to use the suggestions pool. When will that be? Well can you tell me how much time I will need to spend with my family, walking my dog, exercising at the gym, my stamp collection needs an overhaul? When you can tell me that, please predict it for all my colleagues who are editors, when you have done that we can tell you how much spare time we have. Then predict which section will take our fancy, this is our unpaid hobby, then we can predict precisely when your site will be reviewed. But DMOZ has difficulty doing that so we just say it can take from a few days to a few years, that way we always get it right.

I've submitted my site 5 years ago and until today I have yet to see my site in DMOZ. I've given up on it anyway.

Suggesting a site is just that, a suggestion. Did it comply with our guidelines? Have you read that we offer no time limit as to when it will get a review for a POSSIBLE listing?
