With regard to contributing to blogs and forums as a method of building links, do the owners of blogs and forums generally find this to be a nuisance? Or in general do the site owners like to receive these comments, taken for granted that they are relevant to the content

As long as you are contributing relevant information to the blog or forum, they usually welcome it. Just don't spam them.

I would agree with fruzzlies, it is a great way to build relationships if you are contributing something of value and not just spamming them. If you are spamming them, it is going to tick them off.

It's one of my main methods of linkbuilding.

As long as your comments are on-topic & helpful most blog owners are more than happy to approve it.

    1. As a blog/forum commentator, it is one of the best methods of link building in my experience. As long as you are not dropping a generic comemnt which is off-topic and spammy, usually the blog/forum owner should be happy to hear your opinion on the topic at hand.

    2. As a blog owner, I always love and encourage my readers to drop their thoughts as comments. On-topic comments add to your content and I've seen times when my articles were ranked NOT because of text written by me in an article; but because of some keywords in a comment!

    My 2 cents :)

As a poster, it is an easy method as long as you do not bombard a single place with some generic comments or posts. It helps to get backlinks as well as some traffic.

As the owner, I am always getting bombed on with generic or spam comments to my blogs. A lot of them come from the same place. I don't get enough traffic to want to turn on spam blocking for the one that is getting bombed on. I hate thinking I have 13 comments, only for 98% of them to be junk. I wouldn't mind it so much if 50% of the comments were related to my blog. Yet they are not. Sometimes I can just post a file to DL, and some bot or idiot...will post a comment talking about how well it was written. :p

So in some ways webmasters welcome it with open arms, while in other cases they hate it. Depends on if its spam or not.

In fact they would love to have such comments & discussions. But like you said it has to be intelligent. Span & fake comments can be easily identified & ignored.

As most have already said, as long as your posts or comments are relative and informative then most owners shouldn't have a problem.

However, some blog or forum owners are really anal about this for some reason.

I find it very satisfying to hit the 'spam comment' button in Wordpress with Akismet, when someone makes a comment on my site like 'Interesting article, I'm glad I found your blog' with a link to a viagra or other sales site.

Some might call this anal, but a web master's role is to produce quality content and cut out the spam. That's how we built the Internet and still maintain it today. Spammers will always lose.

    Of course.

The anal webmasters are those that refuse to have ANY links, no matter how intelligent or informative a post or comment is. They immediately class it as spam simply because of the link. When in reality the nature of the comment or post adds more appeal to his own site in terms of content.

I agree. The comment should show evidence that you have actually read the post. Even if you disagree, I will approve the comment if it is sincere and not just spam.

I certainly don't mind it. I engage in it myself, so I have no problem approving useful comments on my blogs from those who are building links. Besides, a lot of readers never pay attention to the link/name; they're more focused on the content of the comment.

I've had a couple of blogs in the past and welcomed sensible comments that added value to the article. I've also commented on blogs to build links, again with an apporpriate comment. If done well I think they work well for both parties.

I call this normal. I've approved plenty of comments from people that are clearly trying to create backlinks. The difference is, their comments are always on-topic and actually beneficial to the post. So I have no problem at all with approving them.
