    I also need thr information because at times my paid internet service acts up. I need backup in case my internet goes off again.

    You only need a wifi booster to detect free wifi hotspots near you, cracking WPA password eventhough can be done is still hard though WEP is a different case. Now if the owner uses WPA2 then its almost virtually impossible.
    So my suggestion is to use a booster.

    I don't think you will get a reasonable answer for your Query at DP, since its not a "how to hack" board
    try to ask the same question at some "security forum" and you will get tons of links pointing you in the right direction
